Match Preview
The Suns were expected to kick off their season last week in opening round, but the unfortunate conditions forced the postponement in the game against the Bombers, meaning we’ll get our first look at them this week as they travel to Perth.
The Suns were fairly busy in the off-season, picking up three players from other clubs through either trades or free agency. Daniel Rioli, John Noble and Elliot Himmelberg should all come straight into the Suns best 22 and look to have an impact. The Suns waved goodbye to a number of notable names in the likes of Rory Atkins, Levi Casboult, Sam Day, Brandon Ellis, Jack Lukosius and Darcy Macpherson.
The Suns should have a near full strength team for the Round 1 clash, with only Mac Andrew, Sam Flanders and David Swallow missing from a potential best 22.
The Eagles had another big period of list turnover in the off-season as their rebuild continues to take shape. They waved goodbye to notable names in Andrew Gaff, Jack Darling, Alex Witherden and Tom Barrass and opted to mostly go to the draft to find replacements. They did, however, pick up the services of former Tiger Liam Baker, who should slot straight into the Eagles midfield.
Dom Sheed and Elliot Yeo will both be out long term with knee injuries while Liam Ryan just missed out on selection this week with a hamstring. Outside of that, however, the Eagles are near full strength despite being very young heading into Round 1.
Call me crazy but I love the value of the Eagles here in front of their home crowd in a season opener. It’s been nearly two full years since we’ve seen the Eagles even close to full strength and with another pre-season into the likes of Harley Reid, Oscar Allen and co. I can see them being a severely underrated side this season. Back them to cover the 10.5 point spread here.

Jamie Cripps 1+ Goal – The longer the veteran players on, I think, the closer he moves to goal on a game to game basis. Was basically playing out of the square for much of last year and should stay close to home again in 2025. Eight goals in his last five games and three in two games against the Suns last season.
Jeremy McGovern 20+ Disposals – When fit and firing, I still think he is the best key defender in the game. Has a mix of both intercepting prowess as well as counter attacking ability that few possess. Had 20+ in eight of his last 10 games last season and had 21 in his last against the Suns.
Daniel Rioli 20+ Disposals – Think it’s just same old business just in new colours for Daniel Rioli this season. Will be playing that exact same running half back role for the Suns and I have no doubt that those more in and under midfielders like Miller and Rowell will be under direct instructions to get the ball in Rioli’s hands where possible. 20+ disposals in 20 of his last 21 games.
SGM Odds: $2.50 at BoomBet
