Match Preview
The Saints broke their South Australian hoodoo last weekend with a fantastic win over the Power by 17 points. They have remained in Adelaide all week, which could be an advantage over the traveling Giants here. The Saints are 3-1 on the season and are playing with new found attacking ball movement which currently sees them ranked fourth in total offence in the AFL through four games.
Running half back flankers Jack Sinclair and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera have been the catalysts to this new style of play, with Sinclair currently leading the AFL Coaches Association votes tally. The Saints young players have been super impressive as well in the absence of some best 23 mainstays. Still waiting to make their return to the lineup are the likes of Max King, Mattaes Philippou, Dougal Howard, Hunter Clark and Dan Butler. Skipper Jack Steele should return from a knee injury this week, however.
GWS is flying high after smashing West Coast by 81 points last week. Jesse Hogan was unstoppable, slotting a career-best nine goals and reminding everyone how dangerous this Giants forward line can be when it's humming. That win shot a warning to the rest of the comp as the Giants moved to 3-1 on the season.
The Giants are hopeful that Stephen Coniglio will return to the lineup after recovering from a glute injury this week, while Brent Daniels will need to pass a test to prove his fitness. Outside of those two, the Giants are near full strength for the Gather Round clash.
The Saints have been flying this season but I think there are a few factors which really go against them in this game. Their slick ball movement tends to take a bit of a hit when they are away from the perfect conditions that Marvel Stadium provides, even more so when they play country grounds like Norwood where the wind can be higher than normal.
The other key factor here is the absence of a true full back with Dougal Howard out of the side. Anthony Caminiti has been semi-serviceable down back this season but Power forward Mitch Georgiades got a hold of him last week, which is worrying as he comes up against the premier forward in the comp in Jesse Hogan.
The Saints have been gritty but I think the talent and experience of this Giants side might be a little too much for them this week, especially with so many key players still out of the line-up. I think the Giants cover a line that I think is about 10 points too low here.

Jesse Hogan 3+ Goals - As I mentioned above, I’ve got real concerns about the Saints defence against this big Giants forward line this week. Hogan kicked 2.2 against the Saints last season and I expect him to get plenty of supply this week.
Jack Sinclair 25+ Disposals - Has been arguably the best player in the league through the opening four rounds racking up big numbers and setting up scores for the Saints consistently. Has passed 25 touches in his last three games and averages 28.0 on the season.
Tom Green 25+ Disposals - Should really be getting 25+ here with his eyes closed. Marcus Windhager shouldn’t get the job on Green as he’s probably a little too big, they’ll likely send him to Finn Callaghan instead I think. Green has had 35, 31 and 37 in his three games this season.
SGM Odds: $2.75 at BoomBet
