Day one of the annual three-day Warrnambool Racing Carnival takes place on Tuesday as the Brierly Steeplechase headlines the day. Stern Idol is the race favourite and will be mighty hard to beat on a track which had to be watered on Monday morning. Conditions on Tuesday should be a Soft 6 as thousands of racegoers look to get the carnival off to a positive start.
Brendan Bunworth is here to try and guide you into some winners and has provided his four best bets plus Quaddie selections for Tuesday’s card below!
Warrnambool Racing Tips: Tuesday, April 30th 2024
Race 2: Ecycle Solutions Maiden Hurdle - 12pm (AEST)
(2) Bazini goes good on Soft ground and gets those conditions to suit as he tries to win his first hurdle race at his home track. He won a trial of 6 on April 19 and he has had plenty of jumpouts leading into this. He also raced on April 3 at Ballarat where he was 10th but I think that was also a fitness run for this carnival. He has won 4 from 18 starts and he is in the right stable (Wilde).
(9) Wilewink trialed well on the Soft but his race form on the same grounds isn’t too flash which is a slight worry. He won over 2700m at Stawell leading up to this and is the current favourite.
(3) Davelliom has been in full race mode since March 12 to gain fitness for this and he is racing well. He may roll forward in this and may try and lead all of the way.
(2) Bazini

Race 6: Brierly Steeplechase - 2:20pm (AEST)
(1) Stern Idol loves the Soft and Heavy tracks and looked good when leading all of the way over the chase at Pakenham last start. He is the best horse in the field and he has won on four occasions over this distance. He usually settles up there and I think he might settle 2nd in this before taking over with around 600m to go. He is a winner of 6 of 17 over the jumps but hasn’t won at The Bool yet.
(3) Bell Ex One is pretty good on the flat and has shown he can match it with some classy ones over the jumps too. He was 2nd on April 11 over the jumps and he looked like he was going well. Gordon stays on and he is a clear 2nd tip.
(2) Britannicus loves The Bool and won this race last year. He made up late lengths at Stawell over 2700m in what was really only a fitness run.

Race 8: Merlin Handicap - 3:30pm (AEST)
*Scratched* (14) Unseen Ruler gets weight relief here which should help him after three unplaced runs in a row. He drops back in distance and I reckon he will be strong late after getting a comfortable ride in transit from barrier 1. The rails should still be ok on day 1 and he may sneak along the inside late. Williams gave him a run at Caulfield on Saturday (12th) as he wanted a quick back up into this event.
(11) Queen Air drops 5kg in weight and despite having poor form on the Soft, I think she can run a good race at odds. Has had one start for one win here.
(5) Rolls is very big odds and I think he will run closer to the winner than the loser. He was only beaten 4.5L in the Listed Golden Mile at Bendigo last start and he didn’t have much luck there.
(14) Unseen Ruler E/W
SCR
Race 9: Book Jericho Thru Langley’s Handicap - 4pm (AEST)
(7) Calico Jack can improve here after a good effort for 3rd at Caulfield Heath last start. The Blinkers are on and he is carrying 3kgs less. He returns to the 1200m, a distance he hasn’t really liked previously but the Hayes team have him fitter this time in,
(11) Flying Fizz has drawn poorly in 20 but has been trialing well. She is down in class and is 1 from 1 over the distance.
(13) La Vina has won 3 times on the Soft and despite drawing barrier 19 can run on well late at big odds.
(7) Calico Jack E/W
