Jessica Pegula vs Aryna Sabalenka

It all comes down to Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka. The American hope versus the player in the best recent form.
Pegula had never made it past a quarter final stage of a grand slam prior to this tournament, having lost each of her first six quarter finals for her career. Her first career grand slam semi final did not get off to a good start either, with Karolina Muchova bursting out to a 6-1 2-0* 30/40 lead. The American settled, and did a terrific job of coming back to win 1-6 6-4 6-2. Pegula has made it to the final only dropping the one set to Muchova, and beat players such as Iga Swiatek, Diana Shnaider and Sofia Kenin during the fortnight.
Pegula’s last loss, in Cincinnati the week before the US Open, came at the hands of Sabalenka. The world number two did not have a strong middle part of the year, had to miss Wimbledon due to injury, skipped the Olympics, and has gone on a strong run ever since. The majority of her matches she can control with her power, and when she looks as confident as she does at the moment, she is hard to stop.
Sabalenka lost 9 points on serve in her match against Pegula in Cincinnati. She also showed in the semi final against Emma Navarro that she can handle some adversity, after going down a mini break in the second set tiebreak. A lot would need to change for Pegula to overcome the deficit of their match a few weeks ago, and it’s hard to see Pegula achieving that at the same time as playing the biggest match of her life.
