Match Preview
Get ready for a blockbuster clash as the Brisbane Lions host the Collingwood Magpies in a game that promises momentum swings, dramatic comebacks, and a finals-like atmosphere.
Brisbane are flying at 5–0, but it's how they’ve done it that’s got people talking. Four of those five wins have come after trailing at halftime. They’ve overturned deficits of 13, 24, 26, and 33 points against Sydney, West Coast, Geelong, and the Bulldogs. The only time they led at every change was against Richmond. Last week was a perfect example—they trailed the Bulldogs by 39 early in the third quarter and still won by 21. That comeback equalled a VFL/AFL record of eight straight wins after halftime deficits, a mark that dates all the way back to 1910. Brisbane have been trailing by an average of 31 points in those four comeback wins this year, so they’re no strangers to digging themselves out of trouble.
The concern for the Lions is whether that style of footy is sustainable. Falling behind early every week puts serious pressure on the engine room, and they’ve had to rely on big momentum swings to get over the top. Still, when they get rolling, especially at home, they can look unstoppable. Their forward pressure lifts, they start moving the ball cleaner, and suddenly a five-goal margin can disappear in a matter of minutes. It’s that kind of footy that’s made them one of the most dangerous sides in the comp this season—even if they don’t always start well.
Collingwood come into this one with a 4–1 record, and they’ve had to grind out a few of those wins too. After a rough Opening Round where they were blown off the park by GWS, they’ve bounced back nicely. Two of their four wins have come from halftime deficits, and their ability to go on rapid scoring runs has been a big part of that. Whether it’s a two-goal burst to get back into the game or five in a row to slam the door shut, the Pies love riding waves of momentum. Their structure holds up well under pressure, and they’ve shown they can absorb a lot before hitting back hard.
This is shaping up to be a real see-sawing contest. Both teams have built their seasons on resilience and momentum, and neither has really controlled four quarters consistently. That makes this game tough to call in terms of a winner, but one thing seems clear—it’s probably not going to be one-sided. Brisbane and Collingwood both thrive when the heat is on, and this one could come right down to the final few minutes.
In the Wire to Wire market, the smart play looks like “Any Other Result.” With both clubs having a habit of giving up leads and mounting big comebacks, it’s hard to see either of them leading at every break. Expect swings, surges, and a finish that could go either way.

Zac Bailey 2+ Goals – Has kicked a goal in all five games as well as 3+ goals on three occasions. Is just in some cracking form right how.
Dan McStay 2+ Goals – Hasn’t been hitting the scoreboard a great deal with 5 goals in 5 games, however he comes up against his old side and knows the ground well. Great value here.
Josh Daicos 25+ Disposals – Had a bit of a down week last weekend after coppiing a bit more opposition attention. That won’t be the case here and I expect him to get back to his accumulating best across halfback.
SGM Odds: $6.00 at BoomBet
