Tim Tszyu vs. Carlos Ocampo
Sunday July 18th, 2pm (AEST), Gold Coast Convention Centre
Tim Tszyu is the number one ranked Super-Welterweight and instead of waiting to fight for undisputed gold against champion Jermell Charlo who is out injured, the Aussie will look to keep sharp against Carlos Ocampo.
Tszyu comes into this fight with an undefeated record of 22-0, including 16 knockouts. He last fought just three months ago securing a 9th-round TKO over Tony Harrison.
The Aussie whose legendary father Kostya reigned as the super-lightweight champ, turned pro in 2016 and continues to build his own legacy. He also has notable wins over former world champions Jeff Horn and Tony Harrison.
His opponent Ocampo comes in with a record of 34-2, with 22 knockouts but comes into this weekend’s bout on the back of a decision loss to Sebastian Fundora.
Ocampo is probably Tszyu’s stiffest test to date as he has only suffered losses at the hands of Errol Spence, at welterweight, and Sebastian Fundora.
Tszyu is a prohibitive favourite, expected to win comprehensively on home soil. He opened at $1.20 but has continued to shorten but honestly, I don’t think this fight is going to be as one-sided as many people, bookies included, are expecting.
The Mexican is a dogged orthodox fighter who has only been stopped by Errol Spence Junior, which was at Welterweight.
Tszyu knows he has the next shot at the undisputed title as long as he doesn’t lose and therefore, I would be shocked if he comes in all guns blazing here. Two of Tszyu’s last three fights have gone the distance and Ocampo has proved he can take a shot and roll with the punches. He will also have a six-inch reach advantage and will be happy to stay on the outside and play matador.
Even still Tszyu should just win this fight but I would be shocked if it is by an early finish. Therefore, I am backing the fight to go over 8.5 rounds as my main bet and then a smaller bet on him to win by decision.
Also Backing: Tim Tszyu to win by decision - $4.60 (1 Unit @ TAB)
