NBL25 Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips
Cairns Taipans vs Perth Wildcats
Thursday 7:30pm AEDT, Cairns Convention Centre
The Cairns Taipans have silenced many critics with their red-hot start to NBL25. They began their season with a blowout loss against the Hawks but have bounced back with three straight wins, with the last two coming against last season’s two grand finalists.
Their most recent win was against United on the road and they’ve become somewhat of a bogey team for the Snakes. The Snakes piled on 101 points for the second time in three games, and really ramped things up on the defensive end in the second half where they conceded just 34 points.
In disappointing news, star guard Taran Armstrong reaggravated his foot injury and is set to miss both games in Round 4. On top of that, import Tanner Groves is set to miss at least the next couple of weeks with a calf injury.
In contrast, the Perth Wildcats began their season with a strong win against the Phoenix but have since hit a road block with losses in each of their last three games, two of which were on their home deck.
The most alarming defeat was two games back against United where they were thumped from start to finish to eventually go down by 29 points. Their performance last start against the JackJumpers was a lot better effort wise, although they still came away with a defeat.
The good news for the Wildcats is they’ll get back a couple of their key troops for Thursday night’s game. Tai Webster and Dylan Windler will both be suiting up and should be injected straight into the starting lineup. The unfortunate news is centre Keanu Pinder will miss with concussion.
Game Prediction: It’s an interesting game here with the Snakes sporting a three-game win streak and the Wildcats a three-game losing streak. However, the Wildcats certainly have the more talented team and will be desperate to bounce back after a disappointing Round 4. Their chances improve dramatically with Armstrong unavailable, as he’s key to dictating their offence and they struggled mightily without him in their opening game.
At face value it makes sense to see the Wildcats priced as the underdogs here, but I’m keen to back them in to make amends for last round. I think they get on top of the Armstrong-less Snakes.
