Sandown Lakeside will host Easter Monday thoroughbred racing, with many holiday makers and racegoers expected to be on course. The weather is expected to be warm for the first day of April (28 and sunny), and runners will be racing on a Good surface. Race 1 is scheduled to get underway at 1:10pm (AEDT), and Brendan Bunworth has provided his three best bets on the card, as well as Quaddie selections below.
Sandown Racing Tips: April 1st 2024
Race 2: LockettLED.au Handicap - 1:45pm (AEDT)
*Scratched* (1) Nishino Crescent is fit enough now after four runs in from a spell and with a clear run should be right in the finish here for the Dwyer stable. He steps up 600m in distance but he has raced well over this distance previously. The 62kg that he has to carry is a slight concern I suppose but he carried that well to run a handy 4th last start at Caulfield when running on well. At Sale two starts back he won well after coming from midfield and he kept punters happy starting at a short quote. He has placed in 66 percent of his races so I have chosen to do an Each-Way play here which should give us a return.
(5) Samuel Langhorne I tipped two weeks ago on this site and he ran quite well when 3rd but he never really looked like winning either. He hasn’t won in almost a year and he might be better on the Soft.
(6) Upwoods has never missed a top three finish on a Dry track. He was beaten a nose last start and he races well for Lane.
(5) Samuel Langhorne

Race 4: Thoroughbred Club Australia Handicap - 2:55pm (AEDT)
(2) Aztec State has placed twice for Zahra previously and he comes into this after winning Flemington jumpout on March 22. He drops back to 1400m here after running well for 3rd at Flemington over 1800m but he has won over similar ground (1500m) previously after he got up by a nose at Bendigo on a Dry track. The Pierro gelding gets that again here and should settle nicely from barrier 4 in around 2nd or 3rd position early.
(5) Navy King gets the blinkers on here for the Wilde team who have traveled a fair way for this. Kah stays on after running 4th on top at Hillside last start.
(6) Lady In Pink I like but her form is not that great on a Good track. I will wait until a Soft track comes in a few weeks.
(2) Aztec State
$2.50 (2 Units)
Race 5: Harold at the Horse Gate Memorial - 3:30pm (AEDT)
(2) Pivot City looks the one here after he was close up from bad barrier in his last couple of races. The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr colt has had a freshen up for this and gets Shinn in the saddle, and we know he is in great touch. He has raced in harder races than this and the stable is racing wll t present after notching up a Pakenham winner on Thursday night. His maiden win was excellent after he toyed with them over 1000m and from barrier 7 he will get back again but should creep into the race nicely.
(1) Free Market won well at The Valley on March 8 and has drawn well here in barrier 2. Carrying 61.5kg makes it hard for a win though.
(5) Scorch got done by a neck at Caulfield Heath last start and will be fitter again. McNeil was on that day and he sticks with him for the in-form Hawkes Team.
(2) Pivot City
