Rosehill Racing Tips – Saturday, March 18th 2023
Race 4
(5) Pericles is the one to beat here. What he did to his rivals in the Autumn Classic was unfair and he looks likely to improve even further up to 2000m. He’s the only horse going into the guineas with winning form and is worth taking the shorts about for mine.
(2) Elliptical is the closest danger to Pericles but is a long way off the mark based on his latest performance in the Australian Guineas. The hope for Elliptical is that he needed the run after a tough win 1st up and he’s ready to bounce back 3rd up over the longer trip.
(7) Brosnan romped home last weekend in the Phar Lap Stakes. He looks an unlikely winner of this race but could be some threat if those enormous late sectionals last start translate to a solid performance over 2000m on the back-up.
(5) Pericles - Win
$2.60 (2 Units)
Race 6 – Ranvet Stakes
(7) Montefilia absolutely romped home and finished 5th when returning last time behind Anamoe. She was clearly ahead of the pack past the post there indicating she’s crying out for the 2000m and is ready to run well 2nd up. She’s only missed top 3 once when 2nd up so is a great pick here.
(2) Mo’unga can run extremely well in this event if he shows the same energy out of the gates as he did last time. He ended up finishing 3rd in the Chipping Norton but sat outside Knight’s Order the whole way. He can lead outright this time and get a soft time in the lead over 2000m which should suit him.
(1) Gold Trip is short here. He’s the Melbourne Cup winner but isn’t as dominant over the shorter trips as we’ve seen. There’s no doubt he’s a top hope in this race but I can’t help but feel like he’s being overvalued 2nd up after working home well in a fast-run 1800m 1st up which makes him entitled to have a drop-off now before peaking later in his prep.
(7) Montefilia - Win
$8.50 (1 Unit)
Race 8 - Golden Slipper
(7) Shinzo finally put it all together last time demolishing a Pago Pago field to win by 1.6 lengths after settling last. The horse is drawn gate 1 and will be afforded every favour in the run from there given he jumps well and can take up a prominent-enough position. Ryan Moore has a huge hope here and the price on offer for this horse is ridiculous.
(15) Steel City was caught late by Red Resistance and Learning To Fly in his first 2 career runs but should’ve won in Melbourne with more racing room and showed that when returning to Sydney last time and blitzing his rivals in the Magic Knight Stakes. He’s drawn wide which is a slight concern but he’s a front runner and if he gets across easily enough he’s a huge threat at a huge price.
(10) Learning To Fly has begun her career faultlessly and with gate 4 on Saturday will be looking to extend the picket fence. No reason she can’t do so, but she is a relatively short price in one of the more open golden slippers of recent times.
(7) Shinzo - Each Way
$16.20/$4.80 (1 Unit)
