Richmond vs GWS
Sunday 3:20pm AEST, July 14th, MCG
The end of the season can’t come quick enough for Richmond who are currently in the box seat to secure their first wooden spoon since 2007. They’ve won just two matches to date and have a dismal percentage of 62.3% which is 2% lower than the Kangaroos in 17th.
Last weekend it was the Dockers’ turn to beat up on the Tigers and they did just that to the tune of 51 points (54-105). The Tiges have now failed to get to the 80-point mark in a dozen straight matches, and are averaging just 57 points per game across their past three.
Coach Adem Yze has been shaking things up at selection to try and find a successful formula and has opted for four changes this weekend, all of which were unforced. Headlining the ins is Dion Prestia, while tall forward Samson Ryan has also been recalled.
GWS began 2024 on fire with wins in each of their first five games before their form quickly fell away. They won just three games between Round 6-16, but looked to be somewhat back to their best in a gritty comeback win against the Blues last weekend (116-104).
The Giants trailed by 39 points early in the second term against the Blues before the wheel turned. The Orange Tsunami was in full effect in the middle two quarters where they outscored the Blues by a whopping 69 points (89-20), which was clearly where the game was won.
The Giants have still opted to make one unforced change at selection this week with talented defender Leek Aleer getting omitted. Lachie Ash comes in for him after battling a calf issue in recent weeks.
Match Prediction: The Tigers have had the wood over the Giants in recent years, winning three of their last four meetings including their most recent at the MCG; however, the Tigers are certainly not the side they were in those matches which means recent H2H form can get tossed aside.
Clearly, the Giants are the more talented side and should also be the hungrier dog in the fight considering their finals hopes are well and truly hanging in the balance. I expect them to bring the greater intensity to this fixture and to come away with a comfortable victory at the MCG.
