2024 AFL Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs Carlton
Sunday 3:20pm AEST, June 30th, MCG
Carlton solidified their spot in second place on the ladder, with a 63 point smashing of Geelong in Round 15. Led by Patrick Cripps (41 disposals), Sam Walsh (33), Matthew Kennedy (31) and Tom De Koning (25) the Blues midfield absolutely obliterated Geelong.
Carlton recorded +48 disposals, +15 inside 50’s, +14 tackles, +11 clearances and +11 contested possessions as they led from start to finish in an utterly comprehensive performance.
Richmond had the bye in Round 15, with their last outing a 48 point loss to Hawthorn in Dustin Martin’s 300th game. The Tigers had shown plenty of promise in the fortnight prior to that fixture, with a win in Adelaide over the Crows and a 30 point defeat against the Cats in Geelong were they led for the majority of the game.
Since their loss to Sydney in Round 10, Carlton have won four straight games on the back of a high powered front half game. The Blues have kicked scores of 102, 107, 96 and 138 with wins over the Suns, Power, Bombers and Cats. Carlton are the second highest scoring team in the competition averaging 97 points per game, with Charlie Curnow looking at a potential third straight Coleman Medal with 43 goals.
It’s no surprise that The Blues are strong in scoring form all three origins, ranking third for scores from centre bounce, third in forward half scores and fourth in scores from the defensive half. That balance in scoring is built on a strong statistical profile that sees Carlton ranked second in the league for clearances, third in tackles and first for least opponent disposals.
Another key factor for Carlton in their form is their injury list shrinking significantly from earlier in the season. Adam Cerra is set to return from a hamstring injury, with Matt Cottrell, Jack Martin and Sam Docherty the only players in their best 22 unavailable.
The same cannot be said for Richmond who still have a massive injury list. Tom Lynch will miss after re-injuring his hamstring, while the Tigers are still without Dion Prestia, Dylan Grimes, Marlion Pickett, Maurice Rioli, Jack Ross, Josh Gibcus, Judson Clarke and Tylar Young.
Match Prediction: After being on the end of an eleven game losing streak against the Tigers between 2014-2021, Carlton have had two wins, one loss and a draw in their last four games against Richmond. In Round 1 Carlton scraped over the line by 5 points, however these teams both look very different from that clash earlier in the season.
Carlton’s current four game winning streak has come by an average margin of 38.5 points, with all of those wins coming against much stronger teams. With the fluency Carlton are producing in their front half, this game could turn out very ugly for Richmond.

Sam Walsh 30+ Disposals: As expected, Sam Walsh bounced back from a quiet outing in Round 13 with a huge performance against Geelong. Walsh’s 33 disposal performance was the eighth time in ten games this season he’d reached the 30 disposal mark. Walsh has record 34 and 31 disposals in his last two games against Richmond.
Tom De Koning 25+ Disposals: Since becoming the sole ruckman in Round 11, Tom De Koning has exploded, becoming one of the best ruckman in the competition. De Koning has produced performances of 25, 18, 24 and 25 disposals in his last four games, and will expose Toby Nankervis with his mobility around the ground.
Charlie Curnow 2+ Goals: Charlie Curnow is the most reliable forward in the competition, and it’s no surprise he’s leading the Coleman Medal race with 43 goals. Curnow has kicked multiple goals in all fourteen of his games this season, and has kicked three goals in each of his last two games against the Tigers.
