An enormous card at Randwick this Saturday with ten huge races and several Group races that will see some of the best young horses in the country in action. There's a number of enticing runners on the card and we hope to find you plenty of winners. We recommend getting in early on some before the prices drop come race day.
Blake Lalor is in the saddle to bring us his Randwick racing tips for every race on the card this Saturday. Giddy up!
Randwick Racing Tips: Saturday, September 16th 2023
Race 1: Midway Bm72 – 1600m (11:50 AEST)
(1) Elettrica gets barrier 1 here after winning in this company last start. That win last time was well overdue as this mare had been unlucky not to win in multiple races prior to that breakthrough. She’s going to be hard to beat again here.
(2) Backrower is a money vacuum at the moment and is serially underpriced in markets. He gets blinkers on this time from gate 9 and the way he closed off last start means he has to be considered a chance even if he’s underpriced.
(3) Go Troppo has been an odd horse to follow lately as he was seemingly unlucky but very strong late in the same race as Elettrica 3 starts ago but hasn’t fired much of a shot in 2 races since.
(1) Elettrica E/W
$4.85/$2.10 (1 unit E/W)
Race 2: Highway Class 3 Hcp – 1000m (12:25 AEST)
(2) Derry Grove was was too dominant in his last 2 performances not to be favourite in this event. He’s drawn in gate 10 and can settle in the running line before peeling off in the straight and using his high cruising speed to put himself in the race.
(13) Once Again My Girl steps up from country grade here and is a short price considering that’s the furthest she’s proven herself. She was just moderate in a listed race at Scone so is yet to warrant being such a short price.
(6) Salire rounds out the top 3 here being the 3rd horse in this race that has an x factor about him. He’s drawn better than his 2 main rivals here and could cause a few complications for that reason.
Race 3: Bm88 Hcp – 1600m (13:00 AEST)
(9) Gan Teorainn was moderate 1st up in the Rowley Mile. Her 2nd up performance was great finding some room late between horses and showing a slight turn of foot. 3rd up now after arriving in Australia, drawn gate 3 in weaker grade, this looks the race for her to break through.
(5) Logan Street Lion has followed a similar path of races to the top selection and can also run well under Nash Rawiller. He’s been up a little longer so don’t expect as much improvement.
(10) Straight Acer is too short up in class here. He did win impressively last time though so is some sort of chance here.
(9) Gan Teorainn
$3.80 (2 units)
Race 4: Bm78 Hcp – 1400m (13:35 AEST)
(1) Altivo trialled among the greats leading up to his return here. He ran 3rd to Buenos Noches and Zapateo who are Group 1 level horses. His form is almost immaculate up to this point going down in a photo finish to Daytona Bay. Expect him to be extremely hard to beat here.
(13) Mayrose returned nicely over 1200m 1st up from back in the field. 1400m is her go, barrier 1 will do her a world of good and with added fitness 2nd up she can make a strong impression in this race.
(4) Holymanz may have just needed the hit out 1st up at Moonee Valley or the track and distance may not have suited him. Whatever the case, he’s in a far more favourable position 2nd up over 1400m at Randwick. His black-type form last prep puts him right in contention here.
(1) Altivo win
$3.50 (2 units)
Race 5: Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes – 2000m (14:15 AEST)
(4) Montefilia is simply the best horse in this field by some margin at this stage. She steps up to her preferred distance now, draws perfectly and is 3rd up. There are some progressive horses in this market but none who have done what Montefilia has already done so she should be favourite.
(2) Major Beel is in the market and deserves to be having won a Group 1 Aus Derby over 2400m. She worked home well last start and will enjoy this extra trip out to 2000m.
(18) Tazaral is an absolutely absurd price compared to the favourite who he ran 2nd to last time. If he gets into the race in barrier 2 he’s going to have a dream run and will be there in the closing stages.
(4) Montefilia E/W
$4.60/$2.00 (2 units E/W)
Race 6: Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes – 1400m (14:50 AEST)
(3) Kimochi should’ve won again! She’s going to get there eventually and when she does it will be impressive. She’s showing all the signs of a quality Filly on the way to some big wins this season of which a Group 1 is not out of the question.
(1) Tiz Invincible is the obvious danger given she beat Kimochi last time and has drawn well for another good run. Extra 200m favours Kimochi and if she’s not unlucky again she’ll turn the tables.
(8) Tropical Squall is the 3rd favourite and an interesting runner having won her only 2 races in her career at maiden and bm72 level. Deserves a crack at this and could fill the minors if she keeps improving.
(3) Kimochi
$4.25 (3 units)
Race 7: WFA 7 Stakes – 1600m (15:25 AEST)
(9) Fangirl is going to be hard to beat here holding all the cards after winning the Winx Stakes in stylish fashion 1st up. She’s been given plenty of time off to recuperate and deserves favouritism going into this race.
(1) Think It Over is the nearest direct danger having been seemingly unlucky not to get a clearer run in the Winx Stakes where he finished 6th to Fangirl. His run in the Chelmsford was better finishing 3rd so he should be hitting his peak 3rd up now.
(4) My Oberon is a horse I want to follow off some nice trials leading up to his return in the Tramway. 1600m is more suitable for this horse and there’s no reason he can’t improve significantly 2nd up with added fitness.
(9) Fangirl
$3.50 (2 units)
Race 8: Group 2 The Shorts – 1100m (16:00 AEST)
(7) Remarque won the Concorde and can win this. He has the ability if he can keep his cool and progress from his 1st up win which had plenty of merit working hard around the field and fending off In Secret who had the trail and a much softer run.
(6) Buenos Noches will also get a solid run behind horses from gate 3 and if Dylan Gibbons can get him off the rail at the right time as he did last start, his turn of foot can get him over the line.
(3) Lost And Running will lead or sit right up on speed here and his trials have been phenomenal. He’s a high-speed cruising machine who shouldn’t show any signs of tiring over only 1100m. Hard to catch.
Race 9: Group 3 Bill Ritchie Hcp – 1400m (16:40 AEST)
(11) Olentia looks one of the bets of the day stepping back from Group 2 Tramway which sees plenty of horses progress into the WFA 7 Stakes earlier in the day. That was a tough run for this mare and a solid performance given she worked around the outside of the field and only went down by 1.7L. Easier here, just needs to slot in from the wide draw.
(16) Rediener may be able to retain his winning form from last season and carry it over to this season. This is a tough assignment 1st up but from the good draw and with winning form he’s a chance at least for minors.
(5) Irish Songs is race-fit and in form from Queensland. He’s a big price with that in mind and may be one for exotics or minors.
(11) Olentia win
$3.20 (3 units)
Race 10: Bm88 Hcp – 1200m (17:15 AEST)
(14) Vienna Princess gets a dream run up the inside here and launches late to win after the leaders tire. The script is written for one of my favourite mares to win 1st up and go on to contest black-type races this spring.
(20) Garza Blanca holds the elite Smashing Eagle form which continues to produce. That horse is destined for some big wins this spring and Garza Blanca was able to produce a win of that nature last start. Gate 10 won’t be too bad if he can slot in and peel wide late.
(1) Kote is drawn perfectly to lead or sit handy on the rail. With it out 7m on the weekend that will be the spot to be. Expect Kote to run well here and at least end up in the minors.
