2024 AFL Round 7 Preview & Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs St Kilda
Friday 7:40pm AEST, April 26th, Adelaide Oval
Despite getting off to a blistering start where they led by as many as 31 points against Collingwood last weekend, Port Adelaide succumbed to their second defeat of the season last weekend as they went down by 42 points at the MCG (81-123). They were simply outworked and out-muscled after their fast start and were well beaten in nearly all key statistical categories.
The Power have been labelled as ‘flat-track bullies’ by the media during the week and that’s been a label that has unfortunately been true for Ken Hinkley’s men in recent years. So far this season the Power have defeated likely bottom 10 teams in the Eagles, Tigers, and the Saints, while taking care of a seemingly decent team in the Bombers. However, they’ve been defeated by both the Demons and the Magpies who are clearly top shelf clubs.
A big out in Round 7 for the Power is new recruit and first choice ruckman Ivan Soldo. His absence means fellow new recruit in Jordon Sweet will take over the #1 ruck duties, while Charlie Dixon (managed last week) will pinch-hit in the ruck in his return. In positive news, veteran Travis Boak will return after missing last round with injury.
Similarly, St Kilda come into Friday night’s fixture off a defeat and a performance in which they’ll be bitterly disappointed with. They were rampaged by a much hungrier Bulldogs outfit in Round 7 and ended up on the wrong side of a 64-124 score line.
The Saints’ recent loss was their second in as many weeks and they’ve now lost four from their opening six games. Although alarm bells aren’t seemingly ringing as coach Ross Lyon described their most recent performance as out of character.
As a result of their loss to the Bulldogs, Lyon and his coaching staff have made only two changes to their team this week, with key defender Dougal Howard and rookie Angus Hastie coming in, with Dan Butler and Zak Jones being omitted.
Match Preview: This is a matchup the Power have absolutely thrived in for the best part of a decade, winning 12 of their last 13 meetings. Furthermore, each of their last three clashes have been Saints home games, and the Power have prevailed on all occasions.
Clearly, Hinkley’s style/game plan stands up extremely well against the Saints and being on their home deck at Adelaide Oval only increases their chance of winning. The Power have a habit of beating lesser-talented teams and I expect this to be another example of that.

Port Adelaide H2H – For the reasons above, the Power seem a solid addition to the multi.
Jack Steele 25+ Disposals – He’s reached this mark in every game this season and there should be no stopping him now.
Zak Butters 25+ Disposals – Superstar of the competition and will find plenty of the ball once again.
Dan Houston 25+ Disposals – The Saints allow defenders to rack up touches and Houston should be a beneficiary.
