Match Preview

Port Adelaide and Richmond clash in the twilight game on Saturday in Round 2, with both teams coming into this match with vastly different momentum. The Power are desperate to respond after a horror 91-point thrashing at the hands of Collingwood, while the Tigers are riding high after a stunning comeback victory over Carlton. Despite their contrasting Round 1 performances, Port will enter this contest as strong favourites, though question marks remain over their form.

Port Adelaide’s season opener was nothing short of a disaster. Conceding 136 points in a humiliating loss to Collingwood, the Power were second-best in every area of the game, losing all four quarters by at least two goals. Their defence looked fragile, their midfield was outworked, and their attack failed to generate any momentum. With this being Ken Hinkley’s final season in charge before Josh Carr takes over in 2025, speculation is already swirling about whether the coaching transition should be fast-tracked. Despite the heavy loss, Port have opted to make just one change, with Jeremy Finlayson omitted for first-gamer Christian Moraes, the club’s pick 38 in last year’s draft. The Power’s response this week will be critical in determining whether Round 1 was an aberration or a sign of deeper issues.

Richmond, meanwhile, produced one of the most remarkable upset wins in recent memory, overcoming a 41-point deficit to shock Carlton by 13 points. The Tigers stormed home with 12 of the last 14 goals, showing incredible resilience and a renewed attacking spark. No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor was outstanding on debut, providing plenty of run and creativity. However, the Tigers will be without key forward Tom Lynch due to suspension, while Tyler Sonsie has been dropped. In their place, Liam Fawcett, a key forward from the 2023 draft, will make his debut, while Kaleb Smith also comes into the side. Richmond’s youthful squad will again be tested against an experienced Port outfit, but their Round 1 performance suggests they won’t back down.

Despite their Round 1 struggles, Port Adelaide will start as overwhelming favourites, largely due to their home-ground advantage and Richmond’s inexperience. However, given how poor the Power’s defence was last week and how lively the Tigers’ attack looked, the total points line of 173.5 appears low. Port conceded 136 points in Round 1 and remain undermanned defensively, while their own forward line should relish the opportunity against a young Richmond backline. With perfect conditions expected in Adelaide—26 degrees and mostly sunny—the game should be played at a fast pace with clean ball movement.

Last season’s meetings between these sides were high-scoring affairs, producing totals of 214 and 191 points, which suggests another shootout could be on the cards. While Port Adelaide should respond strongly at home, Richmond’s Round 1 fightback proves they can’t be underestimated. The Power will be eager to make a statement, but given the form lines, confidence in the result is low. Instead, the total points over 173.5 presents as the best betting play in what should be an entertaining contest.

Seth Campbell Anytime Goal Scorer – Had one of the great goal celebrations last weekend and should get amongst the goals again here. The Power defence leaked 21 goals against the Magpies, and there will be opportunities for the Tigers small forwards here.

Jason Horne-Francis 2+ Goals – Was well held by Harry Perryman last weekend but it’s a different proposition at home against the Tigers. Expect the Hornet to have a big game on Saturday.

Willie Rioli 2+ Goals – Willie Rioli was as solid as he could’ve been in a tricky game for Power forwards last weekend. He kicked a goal and he’ll be dangerous again in this one.
