PGA Tour American Express Betting Tips
Palm Springs, LA, Thursday 18th - Sunday 21st January
The PGA Tour returns from Hawaii after a successful two event stint this week and with so much of the US battling blistering cold at the moment, the warmth of Palm Springs will be a welcome sight for golfers and officials.
With the stateside return, a host of top line players will be making their season debuts this week, making for a fairly jam packed field.
The Field
The big names headlining the field this week include the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Sungjae Im, Justin Thomas, Tom Kim, Min Woo Lee and Tony Finau.
The reigning champion of the American Express, Jon Rahm, won’t be back to defend his title this season after defecting to LIV Golf a few weeks ago. However, past winners who will be in attendance include Kim Si-woo, Andrew Landry, Adam Long, Jason Dufner and Bill Haas.
The Course
As has been the case since the 2012 season, the American Express will be played across three courses. Each player to play one round at each of the PGA West, the Nicklaus Tournament Course and the La Quinta Country Club, before a 54-hole cut is made and the top half of the field return to PGA West for the final round.
The host course is a Par 72 at just over 7,110 yards and as one of the TPC sanctioned courses, it provides a good challenge for all types of golfers. The infamous 17th Par 3 is the signature hole on the course, known colloquially as ‘Alcatraz’, an island green hole inspired by the 17th at TPC Sawgrass.
The other two courses in the rotation both play relatively short with La Quinta Country Club measuring 7,060 yard, Par 72 and the Nicklaus Tournament Course coming in at 7,159 yard, Par 72.
Betting Tips
Patrick Cantlay ($9.50/Top 10 $2.15)
Tough to look past the No.5 ranked player in the world this week. The LA native loves playing in his home state and has made the American Express a bit of a stomping ground in recent times despite the lack of a win.In his last four trips to the event, has finished T9, 2nd, T9 and T26. Was decent at the Tournament of Champions a few weeks ago, finishing T12.
Adam Hadwin ($61/Top 40 $2.00)
For a bit more value this week I like the look of Adam Hadwin. The Canadian was solid at the Sentry, finishing T14 before missing the cut at the Sony Open last week. What draws me to him, however, is his dominant record at the American Express. Has played in eight of the last nine events, having never missed cut and racking up six finishes inside the top 25.
