2024 AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips

North Melbourne vs Gold Coast

Saturday 1:45pm AEST, July 6th, Marvel Stadium

Wins have remained elusive but encouraging performances have been consistent for North Melbourne of late. They began the season with 11 straight losses and all of them were by 4+ goals, however over the past month they’ve recorded a nine-point win against the Eagles and three losses by a combined 21 points.

The Kangaroos were outclassed by the Bulldogs last weekend (60-77) although they never gave up and enjoyed a somewhat dominant final term (21-7). Tristan Xerri continued his breakout season in the ruck and quite clearly go the better of last year’s All-Australian ruckman in Tim English.

Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, recruit Zac Fisher will miss this weekend after suffering a leg injury against the Dogs which he was subbed out for in the third term. Although on a positive note, Colby McKercher returns after a long injury layoff and some build-up games in the reserves. George Wardlaw remains out due to concussion protocols.

Gold Coast continued their home dominance with a stirring win over the Magpies in Round 16 (101-90). They led for 90% of the contest before the Magpies launched a comeback and momentarily hit the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Suns were able to hit back with a couple of late goals to secure the four points.

The Suns remain undefeated at home (8-0) and winless on the road (0-7) in season 2024, which is quite remarkable at this stage of the year. Even more alarming is the fact that six of their seven road losses have been by at least 20 points.

Ruckman Jarrod Witts has had a tough time staying on the park this campaign and will miss again in Round 17 due to a fractured vertebra. This means second stringer Ned Moyle will come in for his fifth game of the season.

Match Prediction: Despite the Suns’ well-documented struggles away from home this season, they’re currently priced as the very short favourites to defeat the Kangaroos on Saturday. And while it’s difficult to back the 1-14 Kangaroos to secure a win in this contest, I do believe they’ll get close enough to at least cover the seemingly generous handicap (+19.5).

Same Game Multi

The easiest way to place your Same Game Multi is to click on the BoomBet BetShare button below! This will add our SGM selections straight into your BoomBet bet slip! You can then enter how much you wish to wager and with one click, your bet has been placed!

Paul Curtis 2+ Goals – The Suns have some great key defenders but it’s their smalls who are gettable at times. They lack leg speed in their defensive half and that bodes well for the likes of Curtis.

Jy Simpkin 20+ Disposals – He’s been in great form over the past three weeks with 28, 25, and 21 disposals and should be around the ball all day again.

Tristan Xerri 15+ Disposals – With Witts out, Xerri gets a nice matchup against the second-stringer in Moyle. He’ll have plenty of chances to take the ball out of the ruck which he loves to do.

SGM Odds: $3.50 at BoomBet
