Doomben hosts a 10-race card on Saturday with the Doomben Cup being the main feature, but plenty of stakes/listed races also featuring. The first race commences at 11:08am AEST and the last concludes at 4:30pm AEST. The rail is out 2m the entirety after being in the TRUE position last week – selections are for a GOOD/SOFT track with potential showers on Saturday morning – watch and monitor if possible as history tells us the inside lanes can be advantageous with the rail in this position.

Doomben Racing Tips: Saturday, May 25th 2024
Race 3: Seven Darby Mccarthy 1100m 12:18pm (AEST)
(6) Skirt The Law $6.50/$2.25: we were with her first-up after a sharp trial, but she went too bad to be true (a post-race veterinary examination found her to be lame / forgive). They sent her out for a trial since then and she zipped around the Deagon track under her own steam (was nice work / SHOW ME MERCY was also good). She has a solid second-up record, is unbeaten at Doomben, is proven on good or soft tracks, gets the booking of D. Lane, and draws a nice middle gate in a race that looks to have a stack of speed on paper. I think they can settle midfield and then produce her late for last crack at them. Her second to CHARM STONE last prep over 1100m looks good form for this. She can hit back hard.
(10) Fortuneer $3.80: Resuming 3YO filly who went three from three in her first campaign. Remains unbeaten and must be respected here. Early market support suggests she is capable of winning again.
(3) Show Me Mercy $6.50/$2.20: Resuming 3YO gelding who has been racing in some tough races. Comes into this off two handy trials and is worth thought at the price each way.
(6) Skirt The Law E/W
$6.50/$2.25 (1 Unit)
Race 6: XXXX Chief De Beers 1110m - 2:03pm (AEST)
(4) Shooting For Gold $12/$3.90: Good roughie in a very open race. I think he profiles nicely given he has a solid record fresh, goes very well at Doomben, is unbeaten over this track/trip, and draws a lovely gate to camp in behind what looks another hot speed on paper. He trialled up super behind VODKA MARTINI 2 weeks ago (crossed the line with GOLDEN BOOM who’s also here) when he hit the line hard under a strong grip. He was beaten less than 4.5L in a G1 Oakleigh Plate two preps ago, remember? Happy to spec at the price.
(3) Doull $7.50/$2.60: 4YO who was terrific last prep with his two runs. Returns today off three terrific trials. Watch the market.
(14) Golden Boom $6.50: 4YO gelding who boasts a good record, but draws the carpark today. Can play a role, but will need some luck. Top jockey booked.
(4) Shooting For Gold E/W
$12/$3.90 (0.5 Units)
Race 9: XXXX Doomben Cup 2000m 3:57pm (AEST)
(1) Numerian $9.00/$3.00: A cracking edition of the G1 Doomben Cup and I think this bloke is overs! It was a very good return over 1800m where he was forced to race wide throughout and was 3WNC for large periods, yet he gave a good kick and beat his rivals easily (ties in with KOVALICA and HUETOR). I concede it was a slowly run race which impacted the chances of HUETOR and KOVALICA who got well back in the run, but I thought the win was still full of merit. He gets in well under set weights as the top rater, he handles any sort of going, the extra furlong will suit, and he should take benefit from the first-up effort. He draws a nice gate for Mott and he likes to put himself into races, so I doubt he’ll be far from the speed. Not sure why he’s nearly three times the price of KOVALICA on exposed form. He can win.
(3) Kovalica $3.10: 4YO everyone is tipping in, but I’m not overly keen at the short price in such a open race. Comes into this off a heavy run too which may have taken a bit out of him. Talented enough though and can play a role.
(7) Young Werther $18/$4.60: Won well two back and then was flat last start. Freshened now and can get back to best here at a big price.
(1) Numerian E/W
$9.00/$3.00 (1 Unit)
