The traditional third day of the Flemington Spring Carnival awaits us as Oaks Day is ready to host thousands of racegoers as they hit the lawns of the home straight. The weather looks like it will clear with 22 degrees forecasted after rain is predicted to fall in the 12 hours leading up to Race 1, which starts at 12:40pm (AEDT). The track conditions will be an unknown until the day but I’m planning on it remaining a Good4. My four best bets of the day are below!
Flemington Betting Tips: Thursday, November 9th 2023
Race 3: Good Friday Appeal Trophy - 1:50pm (AEDT)
(7) Kettle Hill has drawn a little wide in barrier 13 so Mark Zahra will have to try and get him into a good position from out there and he is one that usually does settle midfield. Last time at Caulfield he was 4th to Maktoob after running on well and the extra 300m in this race looks like it will suit. He hasn’t won in 2 years but he likes it third up and likes Flemington.
(8) Daiquiri will likely lead this field and will try to pinch slow sectionals. He was 3rd over this distance last time with Blake Shinn on and JMac has replaced him.
(4) Foujita San likes Dry ground and gets Damien Oliver for this ride and Ollie has won on him previously. He should be better for his first ever try over 2000m on October 18 (6th).
(10) Tommy won easily at Ballarat and will settle handy close behind Daiquiri in the run.
(7) Kettle Hill - E/W
$6.50/$2.40 (1 Unit)
Race 4: Inglis Bracelet - 2:30pm (AEDT)
(6) Climbing Star gets the gun run here and should position up about 3rd or 4th in the run. Phillip Stokes trains and his stable is going well with their stayer Daqiansweet Junior running a gallant 5th in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. She's one that wouldn't mind a bit of rain on race morning and a track downgrade to Soft. She doesn’t do her best racing at Flemington but has run 2 placings from 2 starts over this distance.
(2) Foxy Frida will be running on at the end but she does have to carry an extra 1.5kg after her Derby Day 12th in the Group 1 Empire Rose.
(3) Chandon Burj gets back too and wouldn't mind a track downgrade. She ran well in the Seymour Cup (2nd) when 6th at the 400m.
(4) Maron Bullwinkel is up in class but does like Good tracks. She will go back for Jamie Kah but she has won 2 from 2 at Flemington.
(6) Climbing Star - Win
$3 (2 Units)
Race 5: G.H.Mumm Century Stakes - 3:10pm (AEDT)
(10) Najem Suhail drops back to 1000m after he led them a merry dance for 1150 or 1200m last time on Derby Day. On a Good track he will lead again and try to dictate but not go as hard as he did last time where at one occasion he led by 8L. He does get fired up on race day and that might be easier said than done. Damien Lane takes the ride for the first time.
(1) Spacewalk defeated Najem Suhail on Derby Day after Jamie Kah gave him a beautiful ride. He also likes 1000m and JMac hops on this time. He does go up 2kg after winning last week.
(2) Cannonball for Peter Snowden won a trial at Rosehill last week and it is not often that Snowden doesn’t win a race over the Flemington carnival. He likes the Dry but hasn’t placed over the 1000m yet which is a slight concern.
(5) Halvorsen resumes and goes well first up. Kah is on and he is a Group 1 winner.
(10) Najem Suhail - E/W
$6.50/$2.40 (1 Unit)
Race 8: Kennedy Oaks GROUP 1 - 5:10pm (AEDT)
(4) Served Cold won the Geelong Classic after settling around 4th in the run and she gets her preferred Good track again here. There are a couple of leaders in this race and a couple that get a long way back, so with Served Cold’s racing pattern of settling midfield, that should be advantageous. Shinn is sticking with this one and she is basically second up after having a month off in September and she did win when second up last prep. She beat the boys last time and obviously here, she is just racing against her own sex.
(1) Tropical Squall we tipped on here last time and she did run very well when leading and just going down by half a length at Caulfield. She drops 3kg from that run and will roll forward again. She might have more company this time though.
(2) Zardozi for the Cummings/JMac/Godolphin combination is the favourite and deserves to be on the back of an excellent 2nd by Amazonian Lass last start in the Group 2 Wakeful. Does go better on Soft ground though but does look as though she will run out a strong 2500m.
(3) Amazonian Lass was huge last when winning but from barrier 13 and with it wanting to settle on speed, the Lass might use too much energy early and may be found wanting over the final 100m.
(4) Served Cold - E/W
$10/$2.80 (1 Unit)
