Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic (Sunday 11pm AEST)
It’s the young superstar against the old GOAT in the Wimbledon Final once more. Carlos Alcaraz will be aiming to repeat the dose from a year ago when he downed Novak Djokovic on centre court in what was a rather big upset at the time. Alcaraz was unproven on the grass whereas Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion, but it mattered little on the day.
Now a three-time Grand Slam champ at just 21-years-old, Alcaraz will be the favourite when he steps out on centre court on Sunday. The Spaniard is currently priced at around the $1.60 mark at most bookies, whereas the Serb is, a 24-time Grand Slam champ, is sitting at around $2.20 at most places.
These superstars have met on five occasions including twice at Grand Slam level where it’s currently tied at 1-1. Djokovic has won their three of their five meetings overall including their last two, although they’re surprisingly yet to meet in 2024.
Of the pair, Djokovic has easily had the smoothest ride to the final, dropping just two sets en route including a walkover in the quarterfinals against De Minaur. Such a run has been a huge blessing for the Serb considering he had knee surgery in the leadup and his fitness was a huge question mark.
In contrast, Alcaraz has lost at least one set in each of his last four matches and was lucky to escape his R32 clash against Tiafoe where he trailed two sets to one before eventually prevailing in five. Interestingly, Alcaraz has dropped the first set in three of his last four matches, so potentially there’s some value in Djokovic to win the first set if you’re keen to stay away from the H2H markets.
However, I’m keen to gobble up the $2.20 odds on Djokovic to win. He would’ve taken a lot of learnings out of his surprise loss in the final last year and has had a blessed run this fortnight which will have him nice and fresh for a potential grind against Alcaraz.
