2024 AFL Round 22 Preview & Betting Tips
Melbourne vs Port Adelaide
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, August 10th, MCG
It felt like it was season on the line for Melbourne last weekend when they took on the Bulldogs, yet the Demons failed to fire a shot en route to a 51 point defeat (59-110). That loss was the third in a row for the Dees in a season that has been bitterly disappointing.
Coach Craig Goodwin was extremely disappointed with their recent defeat and four changes have been made at selection as a result. Unfortunately, one of the best defenders in the competition in Steven May won’t play a part on Saturday due to injury, which opens the door for Adam Tomlinson to make a return. Christian Salem also returns from injury earlier than first anticipated.
Meanwhile, Port Adelaide enter this contest after the most shocking result we’ve seen for a number of years. They entered their clash with Sydney as an even-money chance but absolutely destroyed the ladder-leaders by a record 112 points (148-36).
As a result of recent form, the Power occupy third sport on the ladder in what’s a very tight race for both the top four and the top eight. And in no surprise, the Power’s coaching staff made no unforced changes to last weekend’s team, although there is one forced move with Todd Marshall replacing the injured Mitch Georgiades.
Match Prediction: It’s an interesting matchup we have here but also one I have a strong opinion on. The Power, on the road, start as the clear favourites and rightly so. Their recent form has been superb. Four extremely strong wins from their past five along with a narrow loss away against the Suns who’ve been hard to beat at PFS.
The Demons’ season has been slipping away since Christian Petracca went down and despite a couple of spirited efforts in recent weeks, I feel this is a very tall order. The Power are coming off a massive team-lifting win and I see them backing it up here.

Port Adelaide to Win – For the reasons mentioned above.
Todd Marshall 2+ Goals – Needs a big game to hold his spot ahead of finals and should get a good matchup as the second tall with May out.
Travis Boak 1+ Goal – had a horror run in front of goal earlier in the year but has seen a few go through the big sticks lately. He remains great value in his role.
SGM Odds: $5.08 at Ladbrokes
