IPL 2025 Season Preview & Betting Tips

Format: The teams are split into two groups of five and each play 14 group matches in total. Each franchise plays against the teams in their group twice, and also faces the team in the same row in the other group twice. They play against the four remaining teams in the other group once. The top four teams in this table qualify for the play-offs.

Group A:                                                               Group B:

Chennai Super Kings                                          Mumbai Indians

Kolkata Knight Riders                                         Sunrisers Hyderabad

Rajasthan Royals                                                Gujarat Titans

Royal Challengers Bengaluru                              Delhi Capitals

Punjab Kings                                                      Lucknow Super Giants

Contenders

Chennai Super Kings: The perennial powerhouse of the IPL, the five time champions missed the Playoffs last season, will be looking to bounce back. Chennai has a star squad featuring the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni. The Super Kings have arguably the best spin attack in the competition with Ravi Ashwin, Noor Ahmad and Ravindra Jadeja. Chennai have made the playoffs in 12 of the 15 seasons they’ve played in, and will be right amongst the mark again.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Sunrisers will be looking to go one better, after losing last season’s Final. Sunrisers will be captained again by Pat Cummins, while they retained their core batting unit with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy. SRH have also added Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami and Adam Zampa, and look to have the deepest squad in the competition. They have match winners, from 1 through 11 and will be incredibly difficult to beat this season.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Last season’s winners have had plenty of change, but will be looking to go back to back with a talented squad. Ajinkya Rahane is the new captain after Shreyas Iyer joined Punjab, while Mitchell Starc wasn’t retained by the franchise despite being player of the match in the Qualifying Final and the Final. Kolkata still have plenty of power hitting with Andre Russell, Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine, whilst also picking up Quinton de Kock. Spencer Johnson and Anrich Nortje will form a frightening pace duo, while Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy will look to control the middle overs. Plenty of talent in the squad, but will the off season changes affect cohesion and chemistry?

Punjab Kings: After being axed as Delhi Capitals coach, Ricky Ponting has wasted no time making his mark in Punjab, picking up an impressive haul at the auction. Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson are amongst the headline signings the Kings made. With 5 Australians in the squad being coached by Ponting, there will be plenty of interest in Punjab Kings this season. Punjab have only made the Playoffs 3 times in 18 seasons, can Ponting turn around the franchise and make them into perennial contenders like he did with Delhi?

Mumbai Indians: The equal most successful franchise in IPL history had a horror campaign in 2024, winning just four games and finishing bottom of the table. Mumbai will be desperate to bounce back, given their squad features some of the best players in Indian cricket. Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya headline the local talent, while they have plenty of overseas stars with Trent Boult, Ryan Rickleton and Mitchell Santner.

Prediction

Sunrisers Hyderabad are perfectly positioned to make amends for last season’s defeat in the Final. Sunrisers had the best batting unit in the league last season, with three of the top eleven run scorers. SRH scored over 200 six times last season, including producing the two highest scores in the history of the competition with 3/287 and 3/277. Ishan Kishan gives them another dangerous batter, while the inclusions of Mohammed Shami, Adam Zampa and Harshal Patel add even more quality to what was a good bowling attack. They have all the pieces to make up a title winning side.
