2024 AFL Round 19 Preview & Betting Tips
Hawthorn vs Collingwood
Saturday 4:35pm AEST, July 20th, MCG
Hawthorn ensured their poor performance against Geelong in Round 18 didn’t have a carry-over effect into last weekend, as they came back from a three-quarter time deficit against the Dockers to run home 13-point winners at their home away from home in Tassie (87-74).
Sam Mitchell won the coaching battle once again, mainly due to his decision to swing captain James Sicily from defence to forward in the second half. Sicily proved to be one of the many match-winners in brown & gold with his three second-half goals.
Unsurprisingly, the Hawks have decided to make only two changes at selection this week with only one of those being forced. Jack Ginnivan is one of the ins after missing a couple of weeks with injury, while the other is tagger Finn Manginess who will likely follow around Nick Daicos all day.
Elsewhere, Collingwood were handed their third straight loss last weekend when they were somewhat easily accounted for by the Cats. The Pies led by a goal at quarter time but it was all one-way traffic after that as they eventually fell by 20 points (71-91).
This is now the second three-match losing streak the reigning premiers have been on in 2024, which is why their finals chances are seemingly hanging by a thread. They enter Round 19 sitting in 12th spot on the ladder, although they’re still only one win outside the top eight.
In positive lineup news, the Pies will regain Dan McStay for the first time this season. The key forward suffered a devastating ACL tear in the finals last season but is now fit and ready to go. Swingman Jeremy Howe also returns, while recruit Lachie Schultz misses with injury.
Match Prediction: This Saturday twilight fixture looms as a mini elimination for these two clubs who sit 12thand 13th on the ladder. Both clubs have 36 points and can move to equal seventh with a win, while a loss makes it extremely difficult to make the eight with just five more matches to come.
The odds are fairly similar with the Hawks currently listed as only the very narrow favourites. However, their Round 18 loss aside, the Hawks have been in fantastic form in the back half of the year and also have a terrific record against the Pies. With the home crowd in their favour, the Hawks have won 12 of their past 13 games in this matchup. I have that trend continuing here.

Hawthorn to Win – Doubling down by adding the Hawks in my Same Game Multi. They just look over the odds in my opinion.
Jack Ginnivan 2+ Goals – Returns from injury just in time to take on his old club. He loves these types of matches.
Bobby Hill 1+ Goal – Been quiet lately but that’s resulted in some solid odds here. He’s a big game player and this is a massive game.
