2024 AFL Round 19 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Gold Coast
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, July 20th, ENGIE Stadium
Have GWS found their mojo again? Recent form certainly suggests that. They enter Round 19 having won consecutive games for the first time since Round 5 and find themselves back inside the top eight as a result – currently 7th.
The Giants won from wire to wire in their most recent game against the Tigers where they finished up 24 points to the good in front of what was a disappointing crowd at the MCG (108-84). Prior to that the Giants secured a huge comeback win against a quality outfit in the Blues.
In massive news, Toby Bedford had his three-match suspension thrown out on Thursday night by the Appeals Board, meaning the half forward turned midfielder is free to play on Saturday. The Giants have made just the one change at selection, with James Peatling coming in for the injured Stephen Coniglio.
Meanwhile, Gold Coast were strong winners against the Power last weekend in an important win for the club. The Suns remain well and truly in the hunt to play finals for the first time in club history despite currently sitting in 12th spot. Such is the tightness of the competition this season, they’re only one win behind 7th.
However, if the Suns are to create history in 2024 they’ll have to start performing on the road. Amazingly, they’re yet to win away from People First Stadium (where they’re 9-0) this campaign, currently sporting a 0-8 road record.
The Suns have made the three changes at selection this week, all of which were forced. Both Alex Davies (three matches) and Malcolm Rosas (one match) received suspensions, while Ben Ainsworth is injured. Headlining the ins for the Suns is former #13 pick Lachie Weller who’s playing his first game since rupturing his ACL in 2023.
Match Prediction: Here we go again. The Suns on the road. Opposing them this season has been highly profitable for punters and until they prove they can win away from PFS it makes sense to continue to target them. On top of that, the Giants have dominated the Suns for a number of years now, winning 12 of their past 13 meetings. Take the Suns to win and cover the small spread here.

GWS to Win – Until the Suns prove they win on the road I’m keen to oppose them.
Toby Greene 3+ Goals – Played his best game of the season last weekend and when he gets hot, he usually stays hot.
Ben Long 1+ Goal – Has put together probably his best season at AFL level as a pressure forward. He’s been hitting the scoreboard regularly.
SGM Odds: $4.20 at BoomBet
