2024 AFL Round 23 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Fremantle
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, August 17th, ENGIE Stadium
GWS have had a strange season. They began the year as arguably the flag fancies and franked that with wins in each of their first five games, before losing seven of their next 10; however; they’ve recovered beautifully and now enter Round 23 on a league-best six-game winning streak.
Perhaps arguably the Giants best win of the season occurred last weekend when they overcame the rampaging Lions on their own deck in an emphatic display, particularly their second half where they piled on 49 points to just the Lions 10.
In even better news for the Giants, ruckman Kieren Briggs and star midfielder Stephen Coniglio are both fit and will return on Saturday, while Harvey Thomas is perhaps the unlucky one that will miss out.
Elsewhere, Fremantle desperately need to bounce back after back-to-back losses. The front end of that was inexcusable when they succumbed to the Bombers fightback despite holding a commanding lead heading into the final term. They then couldn’t account for the plucky Cats on their home deck last outing.
Seemingly in the hunt for a spot in the top 4, the Dockers now need to make sure they in fact stay inside the top 8 and feature in the finals. They currently sit precariously in sixth spot and need to win to ensure they remain in the top 8 at the close of the round.
Interestingly, the Dockers have finally called upon the services of ruckman Liam Reidy to fill the void left by Sean Darcy’s absence. Reidy will take the #1 ruck duties which allows Luke Jackson to spend the majority of his time up forward.
Match Prediction: The Dockers have shown plenty of fight in tough games this season, but they don’t get any tougher than this in my opinion. The Giants are absolutely flying right now and have knocked over a couple of the other form teams in the competition in recent weeks. It’s impossible to back against them in current form and while I do see the Dockers putting up some resistance here, I have to side with the home team.

GWS H2H – For the reasons mentioned above.
Jesse Hogan 3+ Goals – What a season he’s having! Hogan has been enormous right from the outset and should be hitting the scoreboard again on Saturday.
Caleb Serong 25+ Disposals – Super consistent is this man. He’s a disposal machine and should be finding plenty of it again providing he avoids the Bedford tag – watch for any signs pre-game if possible.
