GWS blew a golden opportunity to bypass the semi-finals but eventually came up six points short in a thrilling edition of the Battle of the Bridge. The Giants led for almost the entire match as well as by 21 points at three-quarter time but simply couldn’t hold off Isaac Heeney and the Swans for long enough.
Captain Toby Greene had a game to forget and needs to be better if his team is to remain alive. He was held to just 12 disposals and 0 goals and was the lowest ranked Giants player on the field. His namesake, Tom, was dominant in the midfield with 32 disposals, while Sam Taylor and Jack Buckley were rock solid in defence.
In lineup news, the Giants will welcome back tagger Toby Bedford and it’ll be Toby McMullin that makes way. Bedford will likely get the job on 2x Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale who had 24 disposals last time they met.
The Brisbane boys won’t be too sore after last weekend’s easy win against the Blues. They led 60-0 at one stage during the first half and were never threatened as the cruised home to win by 28 points – a margin that flattered the Blues.
There were a number of great contributors for the Lions and it was the usual suspects who were doing most of the damage. Hugh McCluggage, Dayne Zorko, and Lachie Neale all had plenty of the ball. The Lions also had a great goalkicking spread with six plays kicking multiple goals, led by Cam Rayner with three.
Match Prediction: These clubs met twice during the home and away season and it was the Giants who came away victorious on both occasions. They absolutely destroyed the Lions at home in late April (113-59) and also ran over the top of them at the Gabba only a few weeks ago (82-64).
Although they came away empty-handed last weekend, there was a lot to like about the Giants and the way they played, whereas we didn’t really get a read on the Lions due to how poor and underdone the Blues were. And after watching both meetings between these clubs this season, it’s clear the Giants have the edge, and I’m surprised to see the odds as tight as they currently are.

Toby Greene 2+ Goals – He was somewhat called out by Adam Kingsley after last weekend’s loss and I expect a big response from the skipper here. He’s great value in the goal markets.
Josh Dunkley 25+ Disposals – I expect Neale to get the Bedford tag which puts a lot of responsibility on the likes of Dunkley to get the ball moving forward. He averaged over 25 disposals per game this season.
