2024 AFL Round 7 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Brisbane
Friday 3:25pm AEST, April 25th, Manuka Oval
GWS suffered their first defeat of the season in Round 6 when they fell to a quality team in the Blues at Marvel Stadium. It was a competitive fixture throughout the four quarters but the Giants were simply outhunted in the final term (98-117). Still, they sit very pretty in third spot on the ladder with a 5-1 record.
The Giants had a busy week at the tribunal when fighting the suspensions of both Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene. The former was able to clear his name and will be suiting up on Friday night, while the latter will unfortunately miss this blockbuster clash.
Other key outs for the Giants along with their captain are Stephen Coniglio and Sam Taylor. However, all three are expected to return to the field as early as next week.
In contrast to their upcoming opponents, Brisbane have had a very shaky start to their campaign and enter this clash with a 2-4 record which has them placed in 12th spot on the ladder. They managed to build a mini two-game win streak across Rounds 4 & 5 but were unable to complete the hattrick when they were defeated by the unblemished Cats last weekend (37-63).
Adding further salt to last weekend’s wounds, gun ruckman Oscar McInerny has entered concussion protocolsafter begin KO’d in the second quarter against the Cats. The Big O will be replaced by Darcy Fort who has been in solid form in the reserves this season.
In further lineup news, Conor McKenna has been selected for Friday night’s game after making a successful return from injury in the VFL last weekend. He will replace the out-of-favour midfielder, Jarryd Lyons.
Match prediction: This is an intriguing clash between two clubs who are not quite at full strength, albeit still littered with stars across the field. Interestingly, the Lions have had the wood over the Giants in recent years, winning each of their last five meetings including a 21-point road win at Manuka Oval in 2023 (108-87).
However, the Giants have clearly been the better team through the first six weeks this season and deserve to be shorter in the H2H market in my opinion. Even without the likes of Greene, Coniglio, and Taylor, the Giants should still be able to find a way to bounce back with a win on their home deck.

Charlie Cameron 2+ Goals – The Giants have a plethora of elite key defenders, but aren’t as blessed in the smalls department. Cameron will have to hit the scoreboard for the Lions to be competitive.
Darcy Wilmot 20+ Disposals – Plays that juicy role as the sweeper behind the stoppage and also takes his fair share of kick-ins. Should get to at least 20 touches here.
Jaspa Fletcher 15+ Disposals – Has had a consistent start to the season and comes in having 15+ disposals in each of his last five games.
SGM Odds: $3.60 at BoomBet
