2024 AFL Round 12 Preview & Betting Tips
Geelong vs Richmond
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, June 1st, GMHBA Stadium Geelong
The early market has Geelong winning this game, and comfortably. The Cats won their opening seven games of the season and looked legitimate premiership heavyweights, but they have since lost four on the trot, and they are starting to find their true spot, potentially, as just a mid-table team that could play finals but potentially not threatening. They were really disappointing against GWS last week, and in a milestone game, that would have hurt them even more. Their backline looks as poor as I've seen since Chris Scott took over as coach and teams have gone to town on Tom Stewart. They have shut him down and taken away his intercept game. Their midfield, without Dangerfield and Duncan, looks extremely thin, with Miers being shut down as well in recent weeks, to go with ruck problems where Rhys Stanley looks on the verge of retirement, and with Blicavs suspended, their ruck stock for this week is very much thin.
Richmond have only won the one game this season, amazingly against Premiership favourites Sydney, and for the most part, they have been dreadful in 2024, but they did show some fight against Essendon last Saturday night, led by Dustin Martin, who had 23 disposals and kicked three goals in an awesome display. Predominantly as a forward is his go in life as his career winds down and last week showed how dynamic he can be when a forward. They did upset the Cats in this corresponding game last year, with Dusty dominating with 19 disposals and four goals. The problem with Richmond is in their last five games, they are averaging just over 50 points, which is near the bottom of the competition.
Match Prediction
I am stunned by the price gap between these two teams. Geelong...their midfield is cast, their back line is as weak as I've seen under Chris Scott, and Richmond showed some ticker against Essendon last week, with Dusty playing a dynamic game, mainly as a forward, and that is his role these days. Be the dynamic forward. I think Geelong win, but I don't think it would be a blow out. I think Richmond with the start is the play.

Richmond +47.5: As stated above, I do think this won't be a blow out so I am thinking Tigers with the start is the play.
Dustin Martin 2+ Goals: If Richmond are going to make this a contest, Dusty needs to be forward and he needs to kick goals. Given how bad Geelong and their back line has been recently, I reckon he can be quite dangerous and kick multiple goals.
Jeremy Cameron 2+ Goals: Best forward in the game IMO and I think he can make a statement at home to get his side back into the winners list. He's the main man and the Richmond back line, whilst solid, I think may struggle with Cameron, especially with his running capacity.
