2024 AFL Round 20 Preview & Betting Tips
Fremantle vs West Coast
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, July 27th, Optus Stadium
After a disappointing 2023 campaign where Fremantle failed to play finals footy, the lid on their 2024 season is threatening to blow right off. Most recently the Dockers put on an absolute clinic against the Demons, particularly in the midfield battle, as they stormed out of the gates to eventually win by an easy 50 points (116-66).
The one or two ruck debate has been put to the side for at least a couple of weeks after duo Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson both enjoyed strong displays against the Dees. The pairs tap-work was first class from the outset and led to a domination in clearances (47-16).
In dour news, the Dockers have been forced to make a pair of changes this week with Alex Pearce and Michael Walters both injured, which opens the door for Josh Draper and Tom Emmett to return.
West Coast fans are having to endure yet another season from hell and there’s little sign of relenting. They come into Saturday night’s Derby on an eight-game losing streak which includes two in a row since their change in coach.
If Eagles fans were hoping that a change in coach would solve their problems, then boy they would be disappointed from what they’ve seen to date. Last weekend’s performance against the Saints was disgusting as they showed very little resistance en route to a 72- point defeat (41-113).
In positive news, Jeremy McGovern and Elliot Yeo will return to the side this week, and Jake Waterman will play his 100th game, while star defender Tom Barrass notches up game 150.
Match Prediction: Champion Data revealed during the week that 17 of the last 18 premiers have rated in the top 3 in the competition for their scores from turnover differential, so I’ve taken a bit of a deep dive to see how these teams are tracking in arguably the most important metric in modern footy. As it turns out, over the last five games the Dockers rank #2 in the competition at 19.8 whereas the Eagles rank last by a country mile, currently operating at -33.8 for their scores from turnover differential. To put that in a perspective, the third worst club in the competition over the past five games are the Crows who are -10.4.
All key statistics as well as the trusty eye test tell us that the Dockers are travelling very nicely right now and the complete opposite can be said about the Eagles. The Dockers will also have a bitter taste in their mouth due to their shock loss to the Eagles earlier this season, so I’m expecting a massive response from them here. Take the Dockers to win this in a bloodbath.
Fremantle -36.5

Fremantle to Win – For the reasons mentioned above.
Luke Ryan & Jordan Clark 25+ Disposals – The Eagles are horrible at defending transition and it’ll be the likes of Ryan and Clark who get the chains started. I expect the defenders to get plenty of ball in this one and these two guys are usually the main men.
