Thoroughbred racing returns to Flemington on Saturday with nine races to be won on what will be a Soft or Heavy track. As always around this time of year, we will have to monitor track conditions and rule out horses that aren't very good on rain affected ground. Race 1 starts at 11:50am, and you can find our four best bets for the program are below.
Flemington Racing Tips – Saturday, July 1st 2023
Race 2: Leilani Series Final – 12:25pm (AEST)
(2) Pacific Ruby is 2 from 2 on the Heavy so will appreciate rain on Friday night if it comes. She continues to win through the grades and will likely settle around midfield but should get a nice inside run from the rails draw. She has won 5 from 9 including when first up at Hillside on June 10. Should be fit enough to win again.
(4) Typhoon Titmus should be 100 percent fit now and ready to show best after moving up to her preferred distance of 1400m. Hasn’t won in 5 attempts at Flemington which is a slight concern.
(1) Seonee is running very well but is carrying 60kg this time. She is 4 from 4 over this distance and Billy Egan knows her well having won on her 3 times.
(3) Good and Proper will probably want to track to remain Soft. Hasn’t placed in 2 attempts on the Heavy.
(2) Pacific Ruby - WIN
$2.50 (3 Units)
Race 3: Schweppes Taj Rossi Series Final - 1pm (AEST)
(1) Steparty is unbeaten and can win again after doing it relatively easily at this track last start. He steps up to the mile but all talk is that shouldn’t be an issue. He is untried on the Heavy which is a slight concern but if the track stays Soft, then the $1.50 on offer should be okay. Yendall is on again and the horse is on a fortnight backup. Will likely settle 3rd or 4th in the run.
(3) Sunsource is a quinella chance if he can step out of the barriers better this time. Steparty has beaten him by 5L the last couple but he has missed the kick a length and a half.
(4) Acierto has drawn well (4) and did win very well at Mornington last start when Blake Shinn was on top. Jye McNeil on for the first time here.
(6) Dolphin Skin ran on very well behind Steparty 2 starts back but you would think the toppy would have him covered again.
(1) Steparty - WIN
$1.50 (5 Units)
Race 7: Santa Ana Lane Series Final - 3:30pm (AEST)
(9) Pizarrro for John O’Shea has drawn okay in 5 and should get a chance to position up nicely before running on well over the concluding stages. He is very consistent having been in the top 3 on 11 of 14 starts and he does like damp tracks. He has raced twice previously in Listed grade and despite being unplaced, it didn't look beyond him. He was 5th at Randwick last start after running well but that was on a dry track. His last 2 defeats have totaled less than 2.5L. Very consistent.
(7) Sigh can do it again for Carleen Hefel and Peter Moody. He is getting quite a following and the hat-trick isn’t beyond him. Will face his wettest track in a while here and I might watch this time.
(6) Mnementh has a good winning strike rate and the well-traveled gelding is dropping in class for Mitch Beer. Likes wet tracks and the stable will be up and about if this gets up.
(8) Pal D’Oro goes good on dry ground but is untried on Heavy tracks if conditions go that way.
(9) Pizarro - WIN
$5.50 (2 Units)
Race 8: VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final - 4:10pm (AEST)
(2) Frankie Pinot has drawn poorly in 17 but at the big odds is worth a small bet here I reckon. He hasn’t had much luck this campaign but he did run on very well for 4th in a harder race than this at this track last start. He likes Heavy tracks so will want more rain and he does race well for Maddi Lloyd.
(3) Charterhouse ran on very well behind King Magnus for 2nd last start and should have more fitness from that. Likes this distance!
(6) Keats is one of the likely leaders but it will be hard work leading all of the way on this track late in the day. In a few weeks maybe.
(7) Jimmy The Bear was a flop last start when backed but running 4th. Likes Flemington and likes this distance, and may be worth another try.
(2) Frankie Pinot - WIn
$20 (1 Unit)
