The attention turns to the 50 over format as Australia and England go head-to-head for a five-match series. There are plenty of new names on show, so this should be an exciting series! Jack Tobin has you covered with his preview for game one, which is set for a Thursday night start (9:30pm AEST). Good luck to everyone following along!
England vs Australia: 1st ODI Preview & Betting Tips
Nottingham, Thursday 19th September, 9:30pm AEST
England
Squad: Harry Brook, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, John Turner
Much like the T20 series, England have a new look squad for their first ODI series after Matthew Mott’s sacking. There are only five players in England’s squad who were a part of the disastrous 2023 World Cup campaign (Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid). Harry Brook will capatin after Jos Butler failed to recover from the calf injury that saw him miss last week’s T20 series.
Although Brendon McCullum doesn’t officially start until 2025, interim coach Marcus Trescothick has made it clear McCullum has had influence on the side, and they will look to take on the ‘BazBall’ methodology that the Test side has displayed over the last two years.
England have only played one ODI series after their horrible World Cup campaign where they won just three games and finished seventh. That was a three-match series which they lost 2-1 against the West Indies in December 2023, who were ranked 10th in the world at that time.
Australia
Squad: Mitch Marsh, Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa. Mahli Beardman (Reserve)
Injuries have ravaged Australia’s fast bowler stocks after T20 series against Scotland and England with Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett and Riley Meredith all sent home after suffering injuries. Ben Dwashius and uncapped Mahli Beardman have been flown over to the UK. Australia will be captained by Mitch Marsh as Pat Cummins is being managed ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series.
With five games in eleven days, Australia will likely rotate their side quite heavily, potentially paving the way for Cooper Conolly to make his ODI debut at some point. The Aussies have a good blend of youth and experience, with 12 of the 18 squad members featuring at the 2023 World Cup.
After starting the 2023 World Cup with two straight losses, Australia have won twelve consecutive ODI matches. Their last ODI series was in February this year, a dominant 3-0 win over the West Indies with victories by 8 wickets, 83 runs and 8 wickets.
Match Prediction
Given the lack of ODI cricket played this year given there was a T20 World Cup, it makes it difficult to get a read on these sides early in the series. Australia have a lot more experience and continuity in their side, and have won six of their last seven ODI’s against England. That run includes a series win in England, a series win in Australia and a World Cup match win.
Trent Bridge has traditionally been a high scoring venue in white ball cricket given the small boundaries, so the game will be decided by which bowling attack can hold up better in what will be batter friendly conditions. England have been poor with the ball in white ball cricket over the last 18 months, and the World Champions will be too strong for them in the series opener.

Prop Bet
Adam Zampa has been arguably the biggest catalyst in Australia’s dominant run over England in white ball cricket post the 2019 World Cup. Zampa has been Australia’s leading wicket taker in Australia’s last seven ODI’s against England, with figures of 3/21, 4/31, 4/45, 3/55, 3/51, 3/36, and 4/55. With game one being his 100th ODI, expect Zampa to produce another big performance against the old rival.
