2024 AFL Round 15 Preview & Betting Tips
Carlton vs Geelong
Friday 7:40pm AEST, June 21st, MCG
Carlton enters Round 15 fresh off their bye and in great form having won each of their last three matches. Their most recent win was a handy one as it came against a quality arch-rival in the Bombers to the tune of 26 points at the MCG (96-70).
The Blues standout player in their recent win was Tom De Koning in the ruck, and his sublime solo ruck performance will keep the fit Marc Pittonet out of the side. And as a result of recent success, the Blues have opted to make only one change at selection, with Orazio Fantasia replacing Jack Carroll.
Also coming off a bye are Geelong and perhaps in contrast to their upcoming opponent, the bye came at a great time. Since starting the season at 7-0, the Cats have gone onto lose five of their past six, with their only win in that span coming in unconvincing fashion against the lowly Tigers.
However, in a huge boost for the 2022 premiers, Patrick Dangerfield will finally return from the hamstring injury he ironically suffered against the Blues eight weeks ago. The return of Ollie Henry is another big one, but perhaps the most interesting move at selection is dropping Rhys Stanley, which will leave Mark Blicavs as the #1 ruck option.
Match Prediction: As mentioned above, these clubs met not so long ago in Round 7 and it was the undefeated Cats at the time who got the better of the Blues by 13 points in a shootout at the ‘G (118-105).
Jeremy Cameron was the star of their show in their earlier encounter, booting five goals to go along with 17 disposals. However, since that clash Jezza has only kicked five goals from five outings and seems to be incumbered by his concussion, which is similar to what happened to his output after a head knock last campaign. His form remains a big watch.
Patrick Dangerfield was also arguably BOG in their Round 7 clash prior to hurting his hamstring, and you can’t expect him to be right back to his best in his first game back after a two-month layoff.
In contrast, the Blues have built nicely since that defeat and are almost back to full strength. They’ve had even contributions all across the board and don’t have a weakness at the moment. And due to their knack of playing in tight games, I’m keen to back them in the 1-39 range.
