Tim Tszyu vs Tony Harrison
Sunday March 12th, Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney
Tszyu, the son of boxing legend Kostya (21-0 15 KOs), has primarily fought in his native Australia throughout his career. The 28-year-old did travel to the US last year and in that bout
‘The Soul Taker’ notched a unanimous decision win against Terrell Gausha in Minneapolis at the Armory. In that fight, the Australian was knocked down in the first round but dominated the rest of the fight and won wide on the scorecards.
Now back on home soil and fighting at the Qudos Bank Arena, he’ll take on Tony Harrison in a bout that will lead to a showdown with Jermall Charlo should the Australian win. Tsyzu last fought in Australia in November 2021 and claimed a unanimous decision win against Takeshi Inoue.
Tony Harrison (29-3-1, 21 KO’s) is a former WBC world light-middleweight champion.
In 2017 Harrison attempted to win a world title and was stopped in the 9th round by Jarret Hurd.
He then reeled off three consecutive wins to land a shot at the-WBC champion Jermall Charlo in December 2019. He won the title and notched the biggest win of his career against Charlo.
Harrison was stopped by Charlo in the 11th round when the two fighters rematched in December 2019. Inactivity has hampered Harrison as he did not return to the ring until April 21 when he drew against Bryant Perrella. Harrison then returned in April of last year beating Sergio Garcia.
Both men are coming off a near year long layoff. Currently the odds have the Australian as a $1.35 favourite, while Harrison is the $3.25 underdog.
I think these odds are accurate. Tszyu is the younger, fresher fighter, however, there is some size he will have to get over. Harrison has about a 6-inch reach advantage and 4 inches in height on Tszyu.
This is an intriguing fight because for the most part, Tszyu has not fought the likes of a Hurd or a Charlo yet. He did outlast Olympian Gausha but not many people think much of Gausha outside of a fringe contender. Meanwhile, Harrison has been a world champion.
I would jump all over the $3+ odds for Harrison had he been more active and the fact that all his three losses have come by stoppages to Hurd, Charlo, and even Willie Nelson are concerning.
I do think this fight is a bit of a toss-up. If you are feeling risky, the odds on Harrison is the way to go with value, but i like this fight to go the distance. I wasn’t too impressed with Tszyu against Gausha, but if this fight goes the distance, it will be in favor of the native son of the country, Tszyu.
