BBL14 Sixers vs Renegades Betting Tips
SCG, Monday 15th December, 7:15pm AEDT
Sydney Sixers
Squad: James Vince, Josh Philippe, Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, Jack Edwards, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Todd Murphy, Jafer Chohan, Jackson Bird
There are a few question marks around the Sixers eleven for their opening game of the season. Moises Henriques (groin), Ben Dwarshiuis (pectoral), Hayden Kerr (hamstring) and Daniel Huges (elbow) are all under an injury cloud heading into Monday’s clash. is unlikely to play as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Cricket Australia are yet to confirm whether Sean Abbott will be released from the Test squad and Akeal Hosein won’t play due to the West Indies T20 series against Bangladesh.
The Sixers missed a golden opportunity to win their fourth BBL title when they lost to a depleted Brisbane Heat side at home in the BBL13 Final. The Sixers have largely retained the same squad as last season, which means they’re going to be right amongst the best teams in the competition. They will also have a point of difference with three excellent spinners in Akeal Hosein, Todd Murphy and Jafer Chohan.
Sydney had four of the top 19 run scorers in BBL13 with Moises Henriques (257 runs, 9th), Josh Philippe (257 runs, 9th), James Vince (244 runs, 12th) and Daniel Hughes (221 runs, 19th). To pair with their batting they had three of the top 15 wicket takers in the competition with Ben Dwarshius (19 wickets, 3rd), Jack Edwards (11 wickets, 15th), and Sean Abbott (11 wickets, 15th).
Melbourne Renegades
Squad: Jake Fraser-McGurk, Josh Brown, Tim Seifert, Mackenzie Harvey, Laurie Evans, Jon Wells, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Fergus O'Neill, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa
The Renegades were busy in the off season as they look to improve after finishing second last in BBL13 with just two wins. The Renegades made some big signings picking Laurie Evans from the Scorchers, Josh Brown from the Heat, Kiwi Tim Seifert and young English star Jacob Bethell. Bethell won’t play on Monday due to being in England’s Test side against New Zealand, however when they have a full side available, it looms as an incredibly dangerous batting unit.
Jake Fraser-McGurk was the bright spot in a grim season for the Renegades, with his breakout tournament leading to Australian selection and the IPL, where he dominated for the Delhi Capitals. Fraser-McGurk scored 257 runs at a strike rate of 158.64 batting at number three, however it looks likely he will move to the top of the order in what will be an explosive partnership with Josh Brown.
The Renegades didn’t have a single bowler in the top 20 leading wicket takers in BBL13, with no Gades bowler taking over eight wickets. The Renegades also only had Jake Fraser-McGurk inside the top 25 run scorers in the tournament. With a new coach in Cameron White and some handy recruits, the Renegades should be vastly better than last season.
Match Prediction
Not surprisingly, the Sydney Sixers have had the better of proceeding against the Melbourne Renegades, winning 13 of the 18 games between the two sides. The Sixers have won eight straight games against the Renegades, with the Renegades last win over the Sixers coming in February of 2019.
Given the continuity that the Sixers have had together as a squad, it should give them a big advantage given the new pieces the Renegades will be having to gel together. The Sixers have won 12 of their last 15 games at the SCG, and will kick off their season with a win over the Renegades.
