AFLW Grand Final Preview & Betting Tips
North Melbourne vs Brisbane
Saturday 7:45pm AEDT, IKON Park
North Melbourne showed absolutely no signs of rust from their week off between finals, as they obliterated the Power at home last weekend by 57 points (78-21). The Kangaroos kicked the first 11 goals of the match and held the Power goalless until the final term in what was a brutal display.
The Kangaroos have gone through the home and away season and finals series unbeaten and will be desperate to capture their first ever AFLW premiership. Of course, the Roos made it to the Grand Final last year for the first time, and will be hoping the experience gained from that defeat plays a role on Saturday night.
Fortunately, the Roos came out of their Preliminary Final win unscathed and will go into the Grand Final unchanged. Captain Emma Kearney made a successful return from a hamstring injury last weekend and is clearly good to go once again a week later.
Brisbane came into this season with a target on their back after winning it all in 2023. It hasn’t phased them one bit however, as they’ve enjoyed yet another stellar season and have earned the right to play in their sixth Grand Final in just the competition’s eighth season.
The Lions were in a dog fight against the Crows last weekend but were able to come over the top of their clearly fatigued opponents. The Lions trailed by seven points at the main break but managed to kick five goals to the Crows’ one in the second half, eventually running home 18-point winners.
In more great injury news, the Lions also managed to get through their gruelling battle with the Crows without an injury, and they’ll go into the Grand Final unchanged.
Match Prediction: The Kangaroos have clearly been the best team in the competition this season and it’s no fluke that they’ve remained undefeated up until this point. As a result, they’ve been priced as the short favourites to secure their first AFL Womens premiership. At the time of writing, the Roos are around $1.28 at most bookies, while you can get $3.50+ about the Lions.
I come into this match expecting the Roos to take care of business and come out of it victorious, although the Lions simply cannot be underestimated here. They’re an experienced group that knows exactly what’s needed in these types of pressure situations, and I’d be very surprised if they aren’t in this right up to their eye balls when the whips are cracking. With that said, I’m keen to be on them to keep it close enough to cover the +14.5 line.
