Hawthorn vs Adelaide
Sunday 4:40pm AEST, 28th July, Adelaide Oval
Hawthorn produced their best performance of the season last week to firmly entrench themselves in the top eight race, after starting the season 0-5. Sam Mitchell’s side are in eleventh place on the ladder. Just two points behind eighth placed Essendon and four points behind GWS who are fifth.
The Hawks completely obliterated Collingwood in a 66 point win, recording +146 disposals, +32 inside 50’s and +29 contested possessions. Hawthorn played the wet conditions brilliantly, holding Collingwood to only one goal until late in the third quarter, yet still kicking 20.13.133.
Adelaide rode a stunning rollercoaster to come out victorious against Essendon in one of the games of the year. A run of eight consecutive goals in the third quarter saw Adelaide jump out to a 36 point lead, before conceding ten of the next twelve goals to fall behind at three quarter time.
The Crows remained steadfast however, kicking the final three goals of the game to steal a two point victory inside the final minute. Ben Keays (22 disposals, 5 goals) and Darcy Fogarty (4 goals, 8 marks) were crucial in the win.
Hawthorn have won 10 of their last 13 games, with the Hawks improvement coming on the back of big improvements in scoring from turnover. Across the whole season Hawthorn ranks 14th for scores from turnover (43.4), however across the last seven weeks the Hawks have averaged 50.4 points of turnover, including 72 against Collingwood last week.
Match Prediction: Hawthorn was able to counter Adelaide’s high possession football, with a ruthlessly efficient performance when these sides met back in Round 12. Despite having 17 less disposals than the Crows, the Hawks had 22 more inside 50’s, 14 more contested possessions, 10 more clearances and 7 more scoring shots. The Hawks value high impact rather than high volume, in what is a contrasting style between both teams.
It’s near impossible to look past the Hawks given the run they’re on and the avenues they have to goal. Hawthorn had nine individual goal kickers and six players who kicked multiple goals last week against Collingwood, and will pose plenty of questions for Adelaide’s undermanned defence. The Hawks will kick a winning score and continue their remarkable charge towards September.

Dylan Moore 20+ Disposals: Dylan Moore is finally getting the recognition he deserves after multiple seasons going under the radar. Moore played the game of his life when he played the Crows earlier this year picking up 27 disposals and 5 goals.
Massimo D’Ambrosio 20+ Disposals: Massimo D’Ambrosio has arguably been the recruit of the year, and has put together a serious season in his first at Hawthorn. D’Ambrosio has had 20 or more disposals in seven of his last nine games, including a 26 disposal performance last week.
Jack Ginnivan Anytime Goalscorer: After playing the best game of his career against his former side, Jack Ginnivan will head to Adelaide Oval full of confidence.
