PGA Tour Cognizant Classic Betting Tips
PGA National Resort, Thursday 27th February - Sunday 2nd March
We continue a brief lull in the season before the PGA Tour schedule ramps up in a few weeks’ time with a massive stretch of big tournaments. The Cognizant Classic this weekend provides another great opportunity for lower tier players to accumulate all important FedEx Cup points before the star names return to action across the next month.
The Field
Although slightly more star-power than last week at the Mexico Championship, the field is still relatively thin this week in Florida. Headlining the action will be the likes of Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Russell Henley, Daniel Berger, Sungjae Im, Sepp Straka and Min Woo Lee.
Past winners of the Cognizant Classic who will be looking to add another trophy to the case this weekend include Austin Eckroat, Chris Kirk, Sepp Straka, Matt Jones, Sungjae Im, Keith Mitchell and Russell Henley.
The Course
PGA National has served as the host of the Cognizant Classic (amongst its other names) since all the way back in 2007. The course, originally designed by Tom and George Fazio, dates back to 1981 and plays as a Par 70 at just over 7,100 yards. It features one of the toughest stretches in all of golf, the famous 15th - 17th stretch known as the 'Bear Trap'.
Navigating the Bear Trap is crucial to success at PGA National, and even going through this three hole stretch in even par on Sunday can be the difference between winning and losing. The course itself features more than 100 bunkers along the fairways and greens and consistently ranks in the lower end of PGA Tour golf courses when it comes to average greens in regulation and overall scoring.
Betting Tips
Sepp Straka ($28/Top 20 $2.25)
Has always been a formidable force on the European circuit but has elevated his game this season and can now easily match it with the best on the PGA Tour. Has played six events this season, making the cut in five of them as well as reeling off results of T15, T7, T15 to go along with the win at the American Express. In his last five trips to PGA National, he has missed the cut just once and has two top 10 finishes including the win in 21-22.
Gary Woodland ($91/Top 40 $2.30)
Has struggled for form over the last year but seems to have turned that around recently with three finishes inside the top 22 from four starts this season. All of those came in fairly packed fields in the Sony Open, Pebble Beach and Phoenix Open, so he should be better off for the weaker field here. Has made 10 trips to PGA National in the past, missing the cut just one time and finishing in the top 10 on four separate occasions.
