PGA Tour Mexico Open Betting Tips
Vidanta Vallarta, Thursday 22nd - Sunday 25th February
After an elevated event in LA last week for the Genesis Invitational, the strength of the field has dropped away significantly this week as the tour heads south of the border. Our top pick last week, Patrick Cantlay, looked odds on half-way through the final round before a back nine implosion allowed Hideki Matsuyama the win.
The Field
Just one of the top 25 ranked players in the world will be competing in Mexico this week as defending champion Tony Finau returns to Vidanta in an attempt to go back to back. Other past winners of the Mexico Open who will be in attendance this week include Alvaro Ortiz and Troy Merritt, who won the event before it was an officially sanctioned PGA Tour event.
Other top names oin the greatly reduced field this week include Nicolai Hojgaard, Stephen Jaeger, Emiliano Grillo, Keith Mitchell, Thomas Detry and Thorbjorn Olesen.
The Course
Nestled against the scenic backdrop of the Pacific coastline, the golf course at Vidanta Vallarta not only provides a visually breathtaking setting but also presents a challenging examination for players. Featuring undulating terrain, strategically positioned bunkers, and water hazards, this course requires a diverse skill set.
Designed by Greg Norman, the Signature Course at Vidanta Vallarta opened for play in 2016. This Par 71 championship course can extend up to 7,456 yards from the back tees and runs along the Ameca River, offering stunning views of the Sierra Madre mountains.
The course boasts spacious landing areas with sandy waste zones and numerous water features to challenge errant shots. The expansive green complexes are both swift and exhibit subtle breaks and undulations. Many of the Paspalum greens are well defended by bunkers and surrounded by intricate collection areas.
Betting Tips
Tony Finau ($9.00/Top 10 $2.15)
Pretty hard to look past the World No.24 here. Solely based of strength of field here, Finau is a class above everyone else teeing it up on Thursday. He has two starts at the Mexican Open for a 2nd and a 1st and brings some decent form into the event as well, having not missed the cut in his last seven starts including five finishes inside the top 25 in that span.
Cameron Champ ($56/Top 30 $2.40)
A bit further down the list for some value, I like the look of Cameron Champ. He is one of the few top tier players in this field that has played both of the previous PGA Tour editions of the Mexican Open, finishing 6th in 2022 and 8th in 2023. Hasn’t made the cut in his last few starts but this field seems made for him to churn out a good performance.
