The PGA Tour continues this weekend with a double header of events! The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play will headline the weekend from Austin, Texas and as always, we have you covered with a full preview and betting tips for the event below.
PGA Tour WGC Match Play Betting Tips
Austin Country Club, Thursday March 23rd - 26th
What a successful week it was in PGA Tour betting tips last week as all three of our main tips saluted with Jordan Spieth collecting a top 10 ($2.75) along with both Tommy Fleetwood ($1.90) and Denny McCarthy ($2.10) both recording a top 30. We almost added a win with Spieth and Fleetwood both finishing T3. We’ll look to continue that strong form as we preview the WGC Match Play event below.
The Field
A field of 64 combatants will fight it out to be crowned the matchplay king of 2023 this weekend. Scottie Scheffler, the No.1 player in the world, is the reigning champion of the event and is also coming off a fantastic win at The Players just a few weeks ago.
The other top names in the field include Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa and Viktor Hovland. To outline the strength of the field, the 62 players will be made up of players ranked inside the top 77 in the world.
Previous winners of the event who will be hunting another trophy this week include Scheffler, Billy Horschel, Kevin Kisner and Jason Day.
The Course
Austin Country Club was designed by Pete Dye and will host the match play event for the seventh time this season. The course plays as a Par 71 at just over 7,100 yards but will have a slightly different look in 2023 after some major damage from an ice storm back in February.
The course features two distinct profiles, with the front nine showcasing the classic Texas countryside before the back nine swoops into the lowlands beside Lake Austin. We aren’t so much as looking for players that fit the course profile this week, as in match play, players are playing against their opponent much more than the course.
Betting Tips
Scottie Scheffler ($9.00/$1.90 to win Group 1)
Scottie might still be nursing a bit of a hangover from his big win at The Players a few weeks ago, but he has to command some respect as the defending champion and No.1 player in the world. Not sure about the $9 quota on him to win the event but the $1.90 to win his group against Tom Kim, Alex Noren and Davis Riley looks absolutely free money.
Cameron Young ($31/$2.62 to win Group 15)
Really love the odds of Cameron Young to take out Group 15 this week. It is, in my mind, the weakest group by a fair stretch, with Young set to play against Corey Conners, Sepp Straka and Davis Thompson in the opening three rounds. Young has made his last seven cuts on tour so is rounding into the tournament in some decent form.
Kevin Kisner ($101/$4.75 to win Group 5)
Any time I think about match play my mind instantly goes to Kevin Kisner. He is without doubt one of the best match play players in the world, having won the tournament back in 2019 and finishing 2nd on two more occasions (including last year). Isn’t in the greatest form at the moment, but that only provides more value and match play is a different kettle of fish to a regular 72 hole tournament.
