PGA Tour Valero Texas Open Betting Tips
TPC San Antonio, Thursday 30th March - Sunday 2nd April
It was a solid outing at the WGC Matchplay last week as we hit on two of our three group winner bets with Cameron Young and Scottie Scheffler both saluting in their respective groups. Young nearly went all the way at odds of $31, losing in the final to Sam Burns. We’ll look to find some more winners as we preview the Valero Texas Open below.
The Field
Predictably, with just one week until the Masters, many of the top players in the world have opted to skip the Texas Open this week. Just one player ranked inside the top 20 in the world will be suiting up for the event, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton. For many, it will be the final chance to qualify for the Masters next week.
The field for the first major of the season has just one spot remaining, going to the winner this weekend.
At the top of the betting markets are the likes of Hatton, Rickie Fowler, Corey Conners, Si Woo Kim, Davis Riley and Hideki Matsuyama. Past winners of the event who will be back in action this week include J.J. Spaun, Conners, Andrew Landry, Kevin Chappell, Charley Hoffman, Jimmy Walker and Martin Laird.
The Course
TPC San Antonio, AT&T Oaks Course
Par 72, 7,435 Yards
The AT&T Course at TPC San Antonio has been the home course for the Valero Texas Open since back in 2010. It has traditionally served as the curtain raiser to the Masters, and offers a solid test for all golfers at just over 7,400 yards.
Wind plays a big part here, with the course annually ranking amongst the hardest in Green in Regulation % on the PGA Tour. Ability to play the ball in high winds as well as scrambling will be two key factors we will be targeting when making our tips this week.
There is no better example of the course difficulty than the famous 16 carded by Kevin Na on the Par 4 ninth back in 2016.
Betting Tips
Rickie Fowler ($19/Top 20 $2.15)
Everything seems set up for the fan favourite Fowler to perform well this week. The No.59 ranked player in the world needs to win to avoid missing his third straight Masters, but arguably comes into this opportunity in the best form of the past few years. In his last six PGA Tour events has finished T11, T10, T20, T31, T13 and T17.
Matt Kuchar ($29/Top 30 $1.95)
Like the look of Matt Kuchar this week. The veteran absolutely loves beating up the competition in these lower tier events and although he’s never broken through for a win at TPC San Antonio, he has been super impressive there in the past. In the last 10 years, he has made the cut in 9/9 events, including five top 15 finishes.
Ben Martin ($76/Top 40 $2.25)
Really like the form of Ben Martin at the moment. In his last five PGA Tour events he has finished T13 at Pebble Beach, T5 at the Honda Classic, T54 at The Players, T45 at the Valspar and T8 at the Corales on the weekend. Is rounding into some really nice form and has made the cut in his last four trips to TPC San Antonio.
