BMW Championship
Olympia Fields Country Club, Thursday 17th - Sunday 20th August
It was a solid week for BeforeYouBet golf followers at the St. Jude Championship on the weekend as our top two tips in Rory McIlroy and Max Homa both finished in the top six. We’ll look to continue that form as we head to Illinois this week.
The Field
From the 70 that competed at the St. Jude Championship, just the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings at the conclusion of the tournament advanced to Illinois, before the field will be cut once again to 30 for the Tour Championship next week.
The big mover in the standings after the first playoff event on the weekend was eventual winner Lucas Glover, who jumped into fourth place with the win, behind only the big three in Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
Players just outside the top 30, needing a strong performance to force their way to East Lake for the Tour Championship include Sahith Theegala, Justin Rose, Kurt Kitayama, Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young and Hideki Matsuyama. Notable players who missed the 50 man cut for a start in Illinois include Mackenzie Hughes, Taylor Montgomery, Beau Hossler and Sam Ryder.
The Course
At just over 7,360 yards as a Par 70, the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club is a behemoth. The course was designed by former British Open Champion Willie Park Jr. and has hosted the BMW Championship on one other occasion, back in 2020 when Jon Rahm hoisted the trophy.
Long hitters off the tee will be our play this weekend, as it will give them the best chance to make birdies. Length is crucial here with one Par 3 playing over 250 yards. We’ll be hunting strong ball strikers ranking highly in SG off the tee.
Betting Tips
Rory McIlroy ($8.00/Top 10 $1.70)
How can you look past the Northern Irishman heading into this week. Of the big three, he was the only one to really impress on the weekend, making a run on Sunday to finish T3 just one shot back from the eventual winner. He leads the PGA Tour in average driving distance and shots gained off the tee. Finished T12 in his only trip to Olympia Fields back in 2020. Has not finished lower than 9th in his last eight starts.
Cameron Young ($36/Top 20 $1.72)
The hard hitting American comes into the event needing a good performance to book a place at East Lake and I think this course sets up for him perfectly. He ranks 10th overall in shots gained off the tee and 3rd in driving distance. Has only missed the cut once in his last seven tournaments.
