PGA Tour American Express Betting Tips
Thursday 19th - Sunday 22nd January
It was another solid week in the PGA Tour at the Sony Open last week as we hit on a five unit play for Matt Kuchar to finish inside the top 40 at $1.86 as well as a two unit play on Ryan Palmer to do the same at $2.37. We’ll look to continue the momentum this week as some of the top golfers in the world return to action at the American Express.
The Field
After a bit of a down week when it comes to star power, the Tour is ramping back up this week with a bunch of stars teeing it up. Heading the field at the top of the betting market includes the likes of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Cameron Young, Sungjae Im, Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris.
Past winners of the American Express who will be teeing it up this weekend include Kim Si-woo, Andrew Landry, Adam Long, Jason Dufner and Jon Rahm. interestingly, the defending and two time champion of the American Express, Hudson Swafford, will not be participating this year.
The Course
While the Par 72 TPC Stadium course traditionally serves as the host coure for the event, the American Express is played across three different courses throughout the week. Each player will be paried with an amateur and compete at the TPC Stadium course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course and the La Quinta Country Club over Thursday, Friday and Saturday, before the top half of the field battle it out at TPC again on Sunday.
The host course is a Par 72 at just over 7,110 yards and as one of the TPC sanctioned courses, it provides a good challenge for all types of golfers. The infamous 17th Par 3 is the signature hole on the course, known colloquially as ‘Alcatraz’, an island green hole inspired by the 17th at TPC Sawgrass.
Betting Tips
As always, we’ll be plucking out two of the big dogs to focus on this week as well as two dark horses who we think offer a bit of value.
Patrick Cantlay ($11)
Cantlay is the best bet this weekend. The No.5 ranked player in the world ahs a great record at the American Express, finishing in the top 10 in his last three trips there. He was T16 in his last start at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and should enter the event in some solid form.
Sungjae Im ($21)
The Korean just performs week in week out on the PGA Tour. Consistently has the busiest schedule of any golfer in the world, which makes him a punters delight. Has finished 12th, 10th, 12th and 11th in his four trips to the American Express over the last four years. Should be right in the mix again.
Adam Hadwin ($61)
For value this week I love the look of this week. The Canadian has a great record at the American Express, making the cut in all of his nine trips there as well as picking up four top 10 finishes in his last six. He finished 7th at the Tournament of Champions a few weeks ago before placing 28th at the Sony Open last week. In form.
Chris Kirk ($101)
The big longshot that I like this weekend is Chris Kirk. Is coming off a stellar outing at the Sony Open on the weekend, where he finished 3rd. Has plenty of experience for mixed results at the American Express, but has a 7th place and a few other top 25s there over the years.
Patrick Cantlay Top 10 ($2.40) 3 Units
Sungjae Im Top 20 ($2.15) 2 Units
Adam Hadwin Top 40 ($2.00) 4 Units
Chris Kirk Top 40 ($2.30) 1 Unit
Patrick Cantlay to win
$11 (0.5 Units)
