ATP Australian Open – De Minaur vs Hsu
John Cain Arena, Tuesday, 7pm AEDT
Nick Kyrgios is out of the Australian Open, and while there were some feel good stories to come out of Day 1, the hopes of the nation now largely rest on Alex De Minaur to find his way to the second week of his home Grand Slam. His match has been moved to fill the Nick Kyrgios size hole that now appears in the week 1 John Cain Arena schedule, and he takes on qualifier Yu Hsiou Hsu, one of the more impressive qualifiers to have made it through to the main draw.
I have been incredibly impressed with the level that Hsu has produced across the course of the last 4 months, and qualifying this week has been the biggest achievement in his career to date. This is a SIGNIFICANT step up in not only opposition quality, but also crowd and conditions not working in favour of Hsu. Although De Minaur was unable to lead his team through to the finals of the United Cup, De Minaur looked far more settled in his second match, coming from a set and break down to defeat Rafael Nadal. The game handicap is certainly large, however I am going to work into the total games under market, which looks to be a touch high at 29.5 games. Hsu doesn’t have a serve strong enough to not see regular pressure from De Minaur, so look for the Australian to join the likes of Gadecki, Millman and Hijikata as Australians in the second round.
