2023 AFL Brownlow Round 7 Overview
Round 7 was a round for the goalkickers with several big hauls including 9 goals for Charlie Curnow and 8 goals for Tom Hawkins which are likely to attract Brownlow votes. Contenders Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver, Lachie Neale and Patrick Dangerifeld are likely to climb up the Brownlow leaderboard in Round 7, while our currently leader, Nick Daicos, had a relatively quiet match by his lofty standards.

The Power knocked the Saints off the top of the ladder with a gutsy victory. Jason Horne-Francis was a bull in the middle with 25 disposals, 7 tackles and 11 clearances, while Travis Boak (30 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal) and Zak Butters (27 disposals) were also important. Rowan Marshall had a huge game for the Saints with 26 disposals, 6 marks, 10 tackles and 28 hitouts, with Jack Sinclair (33 disposals) and Jack Steele (28 disposals, 11 tackles, 1 goal) among the best for the Saints.

Brisbane were too strong for the Dockers with Lachie Neale in fine form with 35 disposals, 7 tackles and 13 clearances. Will Ashcroft may have kicked Goal of the Year among his 28 disposals and 2 goals, with Josh Dunkley (28 disposals, 8 tackles) and Zac Bailey (19 disposals, 5 tackles, 2 goals) also very good. Caleb Serong (27 disposals) and Andrew Brayshaw (30 disposals, 2 goals) tried hard for Freo.

Toby Greene was the match-winner with a goal in the dying seconds to give the Giants a remarkable victory in the Battle of the Bridge as they kicked the last four goals of the game. Greene won the Brett Kirk Medal for his 22 disposals and 4 goals. Tom Green (31 disposals, 13 tackles), Stephen Coniglio (28 disposals, 7 clearances, 2 goals), and Harry Perryman (21 disposals, 9 tackles, 3 goals) were also influential for the Giants. Luke Parker looked to have one hand on the medal after his 33 disposals, 11 clearances and 1 goal, while Peter Ladhams was big in the ruck with 24 disposals, 34 hitouts and 1 goal.

The Dogs did enough to get the points against the Hawks, but their superstars were generally kept under check. It was Caleb Daniel who stepped up with 27 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances and 1 goal to be one of their best. Aaron Naughton (4 goals, 15 disposals) and Jack Macrae (26 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances) were also good. Will Day (30 disposals, 7 clearances, 1 goal) was the leading ball winner on the ground, Mitch Lewis (16 disposals, 11 marks, 1 goal) made an excellent return from injury and Ned Reeves (15 disposals, 6 tackles, 43 hitouts) won the ruck battle against Tim English.

A horror day for the Roos as they got whacked by the Demons. Familiar names in Christian Petracca (35 disposals, 8 marks, 3 goals) and Clayton Oliver (37 disposals, 7 marks, 6 clearances) will fight it out for the three Brownlow votes. Kade Chandler (21 disposals, 8 marks, 3 goals), Angus Brayshaw (29 disposals) and Kysaiah Pickett (16 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 goals) were also good, while it’s hard to see any Kangaroos getting close to the votes.

The Eagles were mauled by the Blues who filled their boots out west. Charlie Curnow was monstrous with 9 goals from 18 disposals and 14 marks on a massive night. Blake Acres (34 disposals, 1 goal), Patrick Cripps (33 disposals, 8 tackles, 8 clearances, 1 goal), Nic Newman (34 disposals, 14 marks, 1 goal), Adam Cerra (30 disposals, 8 tackles, 1 goal) and Sam Walsh (30 disposals, 10 tackles) all found plenty of ball. Tim Kelly was best for the Eagles with 27 disposals and 8 tackles.

The Cats are starting to purr in season 2023 with a solid win over the Bombers. Big Tom Hawkins did the damage with 8 goals from 16 disposals and 12 marks in an brilliant performance. Patrick Dangerfield (28 disposals, 10 clearances) and Jeremy Cameron (20 disposals, 3 goals) were also strong for the Cats. Jake Stringer was huge for the Bombers with 26 disposals, 11 clearances and 4 goals in a strong performance. Darcy Parish (38 disposals, 9 clearances) won plenty of ball while Sam Weideman finished with 5 goals from his 14 disposals.

A poor loss by the Tigers has their season on the brink. For the Suns, Noah Anderson (32 disposals, 9 marks, 9 clearances, 1 goal), Will Powell (28 disposals, 13 marks), Darcy Macpherson (31 disposals, 9 marks) and Matt Rowell (26 disposals, 9 tackles, 8 clearances) were busy while Charlie Ballard (24 disposals, 12 marks) was a rock in defence. Tim Taranto (32 disposals, 9 marks, 8 clearances, 1 goal) and Jayden Short (32 disposals, 11 marks) were good for the Tigers.

The Pies have done it again! Another remarkable come-from-behind performance saw them hit the lead with only 20 seconds to go to snatch the win and climb to the top of the AFL ladder. While Nick Daicos was somewhat subdued with 26 disposals, brother Josh was the leading ball winner with 31 disposals, 7 clearances and a goal. Tom Mitchell (29 disposals, 6 tackles, 7 clearances) was busy while Darcy Moore was inspirational with 23 disposals and 6 marks in defence. Jordan Dawson (30 disposals, 5 tackles, 5 clearances) led the way for the Crows.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
