Wimbledon may be over but the tennis season continues on this week, with top level WTA tennis returning to the clay in Lausanne. Steve from Ace Previews has previewed the clash between Potapova and Niemeier and and provided his best bet for the match - is an upset on the cards?
Anastasia Potapova vs Jule Niemeier
Friday 8pm AEST
It’s a fascinating match-up first up on court in Lausanne, with Russian Anastasia Potapova taking on Wimbledon Quarter-Finallist Jule Niemeier for a place in the semi finals. Both have had contrasting recent weeks, with Niemeier producing a career best fortnight at Wimbledon with her quarter final appearance (albeit for no ranking points), and Potapova banned from participating as a Russian.
It’s been an improved year on clay for Potapova, as she has made her way back into the Top 100 and nearing her career high of 64. Potapova is 14-5 on clay this year, including claiming a title in Istanbul in April with back-to-back-to-back wins over Sorribes Tormo, Putintseva and Kudermetova for the loss of one set to claim the title. Her ranking largely doesn’t show her true level for mine, and she has looked strong through wins against Bronzetti and Begu in the early rounds here in Lausanne. Although Niemeier has the better short term form, the ITF level clay form prior to the grass season for mine doesn’t quite stack up with Potapova’s clay form this year. The Russian has the ability to exploit the Niemeier movement on clay, and should enjoy the power battle that takes place today.
Happy to back Potapova here for 1 unit at the moneyline at Topsport.
