Super Rugby Round 6 Betting Tips
Blues vs Highlanders (Friday, Mar 22 5:35pm AEDT)
Round 6 starts at Eden Park as the 1-3 Blues take on the 2-2-1 Highlanders. The home side is on the board for the season after a 28-20 win over the Sunwolves at this venue last round. However, the Highlanders will likely prove a tougher test. Unfortunately, they were unable to play last week due to the cancelled matchup with the Crusaders and the week off will probably benefit them here. Against the Blues, they hold a 5-1 SU record and beat them 34-16 in last season's meeting at Eden Park. The Blues are one of the poorest scoring sides in Super Rugby with 19 points per game and it's hard to see them scoring enough points or overcoming a poor record against the Highlanders.
Hurricanes vs Stormers (Saturday, Mar 23 5:35pm AEDT)
At Westpac Stadium, the 3-1-1 Hurricanes will take on the 3-1 Stormers in an intriguing battle. The home side is 2-0 at home this season but come off a fairly average 23-23 result against the struggling Chiefs. Meanwhile, the Stormers are starting a 4 game road trip and they're coming off an impressive 3 game winning streak. They're built around defence as they allow just 19 points per game, 3rd best in Super Rugby. On the road against the Hurricanes, they did lose 41-22 in 2017. However, they still hold a 4-2 record against them since 2010 and most clashes have been close until the end. So I like the value for the underdog line here.
Waratahs vs Crusaders (Saturday, Mar 23 7:45pm AEDT)
The SCG hosts the NSW Waratahs clash with the Crusaders on Saturday night. At 2-2, the Waratahs season thus far has been inconsistent and they'll face a tough test against the best side in Super Rugby. It starts in attack where they're scoring just 22.8 points per game, which ranks 11th in the league. In contrast, the undefeated Crusaders are the top-ranked scoring team in Super Rugby (35.3 ppg). They're also basically coming off a bye as their Round 5 clash was cancelled. In the end, it's hard to see the Waratahs scoring improving against the Crusaders in what should be another comfortable win for the NZ champions.
Sunwolves vs Lions (Saturday, Mar 23 9:55pm AEDT)
The Sunwolves host the Lions in Singapore on Saturday night and they'll look to end an 0-3 skid against the road team. Overall in those 3 games, the Lions have scored a massive average of 53 points per game and they're travelling with good scoring form. They put up 36 points on the Rebels last week and previously scored 47 against the Jaguares. The Sunwolves aren't the best defensive side in Super Rugby as they allow the 2nd most points per game. They also lost 45-10 at this venue earlier in the season against another South African side (Sharks). This shapes as a similar type of game where the Lions attack will likely prove too good in a comfortable win.
Bulls vs Chiefs (Sunday, Mar 24 12:05am AEDT)
In Pretoria, the 3-1 Bulls will face the 0-4-1 Chiefs on Saturday night. The Chiefs finally showed some form last week as they secured a 23-23 draw with the Hurricanes. But travelling to Pretoria is looking like a tough ask. The home side has smashed the Sharks 37-14 and the Stormers 40-3 in their only home games of the season. They currently rank 1st in Super Rugby for points allowed and that should help them against the struggling Chiefs attack. In contrast, the Chiefs are allowing 38.8 points per game, which is dead last in the league by a fair margin. The line for this game is in good favour for the Bulls as they should easily win by 7.5 points.
Sharks vs Rebels (Sunday, Mar 24 2:15am AEDT)
The Super Rugby action continues into the night as the Sharks and Rebels face off in Durban. Melbourne started their road trip with a close 36-33 loss against the Lions and that will hold them in good stead for this matchup. After starting the season 2-0, the Sharks have been defeated by two South African teams in succession. They don't seem to match up well with the Rebels as they drew 9-9 in the last meeting at this venue. Also in 2018, the Rebels smashed them in Melbourne 46-14. The Rebels are 4-2 ATS against the Sharks since 2011 and they offer good value at the line in what should be a close affair.
Reds vs Brumbies (Sunday, Mar 24 4:05pm AEDT)
It's an all Australian affair on Sunday afternoon as the Reds host the Brumbies at Suncorp. Both sides are coming off a win but you would have to say the Brumbies are in better form. They beat the Waratahs at home last week 19-13 and rank 4th in Super Rugby for points scored. Meanwhile, the Reds escaped with a 34-31 win over the Sunwolves last week but it wasn't overly convincing since they were down 21-5 at the half. In this matchup, the Brumbies do hold a 6-2 head to head record against the Reds. However, the Reds have won the last 2 clashes at Suncorp in low scoring affairs (18-10 and 16-15). The market has the Brumbies as the favourites but this is a tough game to pick if the Reds stand up at home. At this stage, the line is fairly risky so when available, the Under is worth taking. It's a perfect 7-0 at Suncorp when these sides meet and looking at the last 2 matchups, low scoring is on the cards this Sunday.
