Esports Betting Tips: Monday, January 23
Geek Slate vs Talon Esports
DPC SEA Tour 1: Div I
Geek Slate took the Southeast Asian DPC circuit by storm, winning their first four games of Tour 1 with an exceptional 8-1 map difference. Over the first two weeks, they’ve already won against Fnatic (2-0), BOOM Esports (2-1), Execration (2-0), and Bleed eSports (2-0), leaving them with just three more games left to play and with a very solid chance to end the first tour inside the top three.
Talon Esports haven’t had as much success in the first two weeks of the season. They lost their season opener against Execration (0-2), then bounced back with a win against BOOM Esports (2-0), lost against Blacklist International (1-2), and added their second W on Wednesday, with a 2-0 sweep of Team SMG.
Talon Esports haven’t looked nearly as impressive as Geek Slate, so it doesn’t surprise me to see them priced as 2.10 underdogs for this match. Still, I wouldn’t say that Talon can’t win.
They’ve been playing well and were a bit unlucky to lose against Blacklist International last week. I wouldn’t overreact to their loss against Execration since it was the first match of the season and because Execration are evidently much stronger than expected.
Talon Esports are 2-2 but from what I’ve seen from them, they can easily break into the top three. But for that to happen, they need to step up on Monday, and that’s what I expect from them. This should be a close game, so I’m taking over 2.5 maps at 2.00.

Team SMG vs BOOM Esports
DPC SEA Tour 1: Div I
Team SMG are 1-3 ahead of the final week of DPC SEA Tour 1: Division I, with just one win against Fnatic (2-1) and defeats against Execration (0-2), Bleed eSports (1-2), and Talon Esports (0-2). SMG wasn’t expected to be a very strong team, so I’m not too shocked by those results, and I don’t expect them to show us much more next week.
Although Team SMG had some upside ahead of the 2023 season, I’ve yet to see anything from them that would convince me that they’re capable of causing upsets. Luckily for them, though, they’re set to face BOOM Esports, who have looked just as bad so far this season.
BOOM Esports were one of the best SEA teams in 2022 but have since fallen from grace. With a 1-4 record, they’re more or less locked out of advancing to Lima Major, and unless the stars align, they won’t see much success this term.
So far, BOOM have beaten just Fnatic (2-1), which is hardly impressive considering Fnatic are 0-5 with just three maps won. In other games, BOOM were highly underwhelming, losing against Talon (0-2), Geek Slate (1-2), Execration (0-2), and Bleed eSports (1-2).
The only positive thing I can take from BOOM’s run is a map against Geek Slate, but as it seems, that was more of a fluke than anything else.
This is a match between two very weak teams that can go either way. I do prefer SMG, as they’ve shown a bit more and yet they’re priced as the underdogs. But has to do with BOOM Esports’ brand recognition as the former best team in the region.

Bleed eSports vs Execration
DPC SEA Tour 1: Div I
Execration have lost just one game this tour, against Geek Slate, who beat them 2-0 on Wednesday. Besides that loss, Execration have looked unstoppable, beating Talon Esports, Team SMG, BOOM Esports, and Blacklist International, all with a 2-0 sweep.
Bleed eSports are 3-2 ahead of this match, with wins against Fnatic (2-0), Team SMG (2-1), and BOOM Esports (2-1) and defeats against Blacklist International (1-2) and Geek Slate (0-2). Their record isn’t bad compared to the expectations, but I wouldn’t praise Bleed eSports too much.
Their only wins came against struggling teams with a negative record, so even though Bleed eSports have proven to be effective in beating lesser squads, they’ve yet to show anything against stronger opponents. With that in mind, I can’t find a good reason to believe they can stop Execration, who have been tearing through the region.
At 1.57, Execration are severely underrated and a great bet. But considering how much stronger they’ve looked so far, I have no issues taking Execration to get it done in two maps.
