Match Preview
The Broncos produced an impressive display against the Dolphins last week, defeating their opponents 20-12 in the Brisbane-derby. Clearly the better side, they found trouble in maintaining consistency; they were often unable to turn their pressure into points. They completed at 89% with just 45% possession and a higher standard is needed from them in coming weeks if they are to be competitive. Missing 42 tackles isn’t going to help their cause either.
The Tigers fell agonisingly short against the Warriors at home on Sunday, failing to close out the match when it mattered most. In a tight contest, they did their best to manage an 80% completion rate. They let themselves down defensively allowing 10.1m per carry, missing 42 tackles and allowing 4 line breaks. Similar defensive displays against superior teams will only lead to further loses.
The omission of Luai (suspension) for this game has drastically changed opinion on the visitors’ chances. He provides direction and poise in attack and leads with action in defence. To suggest that they are as far away as the odds indicate is another story altogether. The Tigers have allowed just 15ppg (Broncos 18ppg) this season and have a renewed focus in this area. Luai’s absence should change this too much.
The Broncos will be better than their match last week suggests and build pressure well at the end of attacking sets with clever kicks from their halves. However, they have their limitations as well. The firepower they have within their team always suggests a high scoring contest and their season average of 29ppg (Tigers 23ppg) in attack indicates it could be replicated. They are yet to face a team with the structure of the Tigers though and this means, while they may not go close to winning, this match will be not as one sided as most think.

Leg 1: Broncos 1-12 – for all the reasons mentioned above, and then some...this game should be tight for 80 minutes.
Leg 2: Total Points Under 52.5 – the average total in the past 5 matches is 53.2 points, with several matches skewed by poor defensive performances. That will not be the case this year with a renewed focus from each side.
Leg 3: Cobbo to score – He’s crossed for 4 tries already this season and is a danger in multiple situations. There was a sense that he was back to his best last week against the Dolphins also.
SGM Odds: $10 at BoomBet
