Match Preview
Richmond take on Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium, and this one looks like it could get ugly for the Tigers. Sitting at 1-4 after five rounds, they’ve now dropped four in a row since that surprise Opening Round win over Carlton. The trend has been pretty clear – they hang in there during the first half, but completely fall away late. Last weekend’s loss to Fremantle was a prime example: competitive early, then blown out after the break, getting outscored 59-8 in the second half. It was their third loss of the year by more than 60 points, and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon.
To be fair, there are green shoots. Their younger players have shown plenty of promise, and getting top pick Sam Lalor back in this week is a boost. Noah Balta also returns after his suspension, and it will be interesting to see the reception he gets from the crowd. The midfield still has some proven campaigners, but they’ll be up against arguably the best engine room in the league right now – and that’s where things might really start to unravel.
The Suns are flying. They’re 4-0, sitting comfortably inside the top four, and this is officially the best start to a season in the club’s history. Even more impressively, they’ve won three of those games by 10+ goals, and cracked the 120-point mark in all three of them. They’re not just winning, they’re dismantling teams with ruthless pressure and slick ball movement. This isn’t the flaky Gold Coast we’ve seen in the past – they’re hunting teams, and they’ve got confidence pouring out of them. Connor Budarick comes in this week for the omitted Sam Clohesy, but otherwise they’re keeping things stable.
Recent history doesn’t offer the Tigers much hope either. Gold Coast have won the past five meetings between the two sides, and Richmond’s last six games at Marvel have all been losses. This venue hasn’t been kind to them, and against the hottest team in the comp, it’s hard to see that changing. Richmond might stick around early like they’ve done all season, but when the Suns start rolling, it could blow out fast. Expect Gold Coast to win big and easily cover the 43.5-point line. This could be another long night for Tiger fans.

Ben Kings 4+ Goals – Has been hitting the scoreboard with regularity and that will continue on Saturday night. Expecting at least four goals from Kings here.
Ben Long 2+ Goals – Arguably the form small forward of the competition through the first five rounds and should add another impressive game to his resume.
Noah Anderson 30+ Disposals – Has been in ripping form so far this season and this is obviously a favourable matchup. I expect him to be racking up big numbers in this one.
SGM Odds: $3.00 at BoomBet
