Match Preview
The Giants dropped their first game of 2025 in their last outing, a 12 point defeat to the Hawks in Round 3 to fall to 2-1. The Giants got off to a hot start with the wind, kicking 5 unanswered goals in the first quarter, but couldn’t capitalise with the wind in the third quarter, which was the difference in the game.
GWS have made one change to their side with Jake Riccardi returning after his off season ban, with Lachie Keeffe omitted.
It’s been carnage at the selection table for West Coast after their Derby loss, making four changes, including three debutants. Tom Gross, Hamish Davis, Sandy Brock and Clay Hall have been named, with Jeremy McGovern (abductor), Liam Ryan (illness), Elijah Hewett (calf) and Harry Edwards (omitted) out of the team.
It’s a massive blow for the Eagles losing some of their only experienced players in McGovern and Ryan, with McGovern leaving a massive hole in the West Coast backline. The Eagles backline will be under the pump against a stacked Giants forward line.
As expected, the Giants have West Coast covered in just about every statistical category, with GWS’ slingshot footy off halfback likely to give the Eagles plenty of issues. The Giants rank 1st in the AFL for rebound 50’s, 1st for scores from kick ins and 5th for scores from defensive half.
Another big issue for West Coast is their ability to defend turnovers, having conceded 69, 54 and 90 points from turnover across their first three games. An average of 71 points per game conceded from turnovers is abysmal, and they won’t be competitive if they continue that trend this weekend.
A backline of Brock, Hough, Ginbey, Maric, Cole and Baker are certainly not capable of stopping a forward line featuring Hogan, Greene, Cadman, Stringer, Daniels and Jones. The Giants key forwards will run riot against a small and inexperienced West Coast defence that has conceded 112 points per game across the first three rounds of 2025. West Coast have lost 25.7% of their 1 on 1 contests in their defensive 50 this season, which is alarmingly high given how many inside 50’s they’ve conceded this season.
The Eagles defence hasn’t been helped by their teammates up the field, with West Coast ranking 18th for inside 50’s, 17th in clearances, 17th for contested possessions and 17th ground ball gets. This has meant the ball has lived in the Eagles defensive half, and opponents have had no troubles generating good looks inside 50.
The line at 67.5 looks large, however when these sides met last season, the Giants won by 65 points. GWS have won three of the last four matchups between the two sides, and in those three wins have kicked an average score of 113 points. With West Coast’s backline looking incredibly vulnerable, the Giants will have a day out inside forward 50.

Tom Green 30+ Disposals: Green has started the season in fine form with 31 and 35 disposal performances on return from a calf injury. The Giants star had 34 disposals in his last game against the Eagles, and will be looking to produce another big performance.
Finn Callaghan 25+ Disposals: After 33 and 31 disposal performances to kick off season 2025, Callaghan had a down game against the Hawks in tricky conditions, registering only 21 disposals. Expect a bounce back from the young gun against a struggling West Coast midfield.
Jake Stringer 2+ Goals: Stringer showed promising signs in his Giants debut, but couldn’t capitalise, kicking three behinds. Stringer has had his way in recent seasons against the Eagles, kicking 13 goals from his last 5 games against West Coast.
