Horse racing returns to Mornington for the midweek timetable this week with eight competitive races on the card. The weather is a sunny forecast of 22 making it ideal conditions for thoroughbred racing. We have one of our three best plays of the day in the first race which starts at 3:40pm (AEDT), with Chris Waller and Damien Lane combining. The popular Quaddie starts at 6pm, with gallopers again running on a Good surface.
Mornington Racing Tips: Wednesday, January 22nd 2025
Race 1: Sportsbet Racing Form Plate - 3:40pm (AEDT)
(9) Belle Detelle gets the widest draw of the race in nine but she is likely to go back anyway. She ran home very well at Seymour (2nd) on debut and if she can handle the tight Mornington circuit she should be winning. She went for a jog around Werribee in a 1100m jumpout only 5 days ago to get some more fitness for this.
(2) Itwasonlyakiss has just been okay in both unplaced career starts but the Payne stable has had a good few months so she has to be included with Billy Egan remaining on who knows her well.
(3) Ongatiti has had a 6-month spell leading into this and may get a nice run from barrier 3. Both career starts were in harder races than this and were both on rain-affected ground. Might just like Dry tracks.
(9) Belle Detelle WIN
$2.10 (2 Units)
Race 2: Senet Gambling Law Experts Plate - 4:15pm (AEDT)
(8) Sirena has more fitness now after being runner-up at this track on January 8. She had a gun run in that race and should get a similar run here from the 3. On December 16 she won a Cranbourne jumpout in good time and she does look to have pace. Jye McNeil on for the Griffiths stable, both know how to get a winner.
(7) Rhia is a first starter who will be sure to receive support with the combination of Freedman’s and Craig Williams is her corner. She also won a Cranbourne jumpout in good time and I’m only against her because it’s her first time under race conditions at a difficult track to race on.
(4) Fly is a first starter who was 3rd in a strong Flemington jumpout on January 10. Barrier 2 is a good get if he can sit behind the leader.
(8) Sirena WIN
$2.60 (2 Units)
Race 4: The Big Screen Company Handicap - 5:25pm (AEDT)
(9) Sweet Jasmine needs to improve and I think she will after three of her last four starts being unplaced. On the positive, her last run was better when she made up good ground at The Bool over 1400m. The extra 100m in this event looks ideal and this race looks weaker. From barrier 6 she will likely position up around 6th on the outside before she starts her run at the 400m.
(4) Cash Converter is fit and is consistent. Remains at the 1500m where he ran 2nd at Cranbourne last start. Solid Place hope again at even money.
(6) Arden Green has been in the money on 3 occasions from 4 starts at Mornington and she only just got done at Werribee last start after getting tired the 100m, so the drop down in distance looks ideal.
(9) Sweet Jasmine WIN
$4.40 (1 Unit)
